I like that most of the recommended management actions are already standard practice on many farms. Therefore increased adoption is possible in the near term--with the right incentives.

Finding beneficial management is a high research priority! "Cover crops’ effects on nitrous oxide [is] unclear, with variances ranging from increases to decreases in emissions. Research is needed to determine the conditions under which cover crop varieties lead to different direction..."

"A global meta-analysis found that cover crops reduce nitrate leaching from croplands by an average of 69 percent, with the greatest benefits observed on increasingly sandier soils and from non-leguminous cover crops ." In the US Northeast, this requires planting *now* so the roots reach the N.

A wet spring put many prevented-planting acres into buckwheat in Yates County. When do you #killontime? Terminate #covercrop now and collect insurance or wait till harvest and collect $620 a ton from the mill in town? A triticale winter cover can follow either option.

A buckwheat #covercrop is great for soil aggregation. Those fine roots reach the whole soil volume and secrete mucopolysaccharides. This plant is but five weeks old and ready for termination. These will decompose fast. A great value in a short time.

More automation is a required for future vegetable production. But the performance requirement to enter the market at all is so high that it takes a big R&D budget to get anywhere in the ballpark.

Cover crops do important things, including building soil organic matter. But the potential contribution to carbon sequestration is negligible.

Certain cover crops improve infiltration and internal drainage. This cornfield, despite drain tile and 2% slope, suffered from poor drainage this wet spring. No KHB4J. The right cover crop would return more value than corn, especially if the next crop is grapes.

There are lots of benefits to cover cropping before planting orchards and vineyards. Research is needed on local optimization and effect on local management priorities. I suspect profitability could come years sooner from lower managment costs if optimized.

There is still quite a lot to learn about cover crops in potato production to meet he soil-health requirements of this hi-performance production. A research opportunity! I like seeing the adoption of buckwheat--mainly for wireworm suppression, but it also makes the soil more friable for hilling.

There is so much going on in this field that video lit reviews are really helpful. Some conclusions are geneerally applicable, others identify essential features of a specific system. It takes review like this to sort those out so practitioners have the right take-home message for their situation.

When conventional farmers make soil health a priority, they do a fine job of it. Many use the most appropriate #covercrops to meet the management goals required to improve soil health on each field.

Certain #Covercrops are good at aggregating clay soils, making them less likely to crack. Buckwheat is one, though it will not tolerate the puddles common on those soils. Other covercrops are blamed for clogging drain tile. So choose wisely!

Ray Weil goes on, "an average of 250 kg N/ha of soluble nitrogen was in soils after the main cropping season and susceptible to over-winter leaching. Cover crops obtained nitrogen from 2 m deep." The key is to plant early enough for the cover crop roots grow that deep in fall. How many GDD needed?

In May, we see if the cover crop was sown soon enough to scavenge N. Ray Weil (UMD) writes "high N uptake in fall prior to winter dormancy requires early planting. An extra 2–3 weeks of warm weather for fall cover crop growth more than compensated for lower stand." link.springer.com/chapter/10.1...
