With the release of VS 2026 insiders, I've been trying to embrace #github #copilot agent mode. It's worked for some things but we fell out this morning! This was a simple change. I thought CoPilot might be able to save me some typing with but it took longer and more keystrokes than doing it myself!

I've been absent from social media and content creation for a bit. A few months back I got a medical diagnosis which has taken a while to digest. I have Common Variable Immunodeficiency (#CVID) which is a rare, and if untreated, potentially life-threatening chronic condition. #chronicillness (1/5)

It's already 26°C in my small home office, and the Dyson is not taking the edge off. I'll be migrating outside to the garden soon, as there's a nice breeze today.

The sun is out so I working outside in the garden this morning.

My mean time to covered in baby sick after a shower and clean T-shirt is about 2 mins!

It's been two weeks since this little lady entered our lives. We're adjusting to life as a family of four. I'm taking several weeks to enjoy the baby bubble and adapt to the lack of sleep!

Up early this morning as I was keen to get back to the ideas I had on this. Now have a working solution using TUnit as the test framework.

This evening, I've been hacking on ideas for testing #opentelemetry instrumentation for an app using the #aspnetcore WebApplicationFactory integration tests. I'm getting close with something reasonable and will write it up as a blog post once I've let the idea percolate and refined it. #dotnet

I'm spending this morning rehearsing and refining my talk for #ndclondon next week. Pretty happy with it, but there's so much I want to cover, and 60 minutes goes fast. Managed to hit the time limit, but then I thought of one extra thing I wanted to show, and now working out how to squeeze that in.

I wasn't sure my recovery would allow me to get to #ndclondon next week. I'm pleased to say that I think I can do it. I'll need to manage my energy and take lots of breaks. I've been able to mostly finish prepping my talk this week and I'm excited to present it.

Thanks for all the well wishes. Antibiotics are doing their thing, and I'm slowly improving. I'm home today and back in for a few more daily doses of antibiotics. Will take a while to fully recover, but hopefully, most improvement in the next few weeks. NHS staff were great.

So 2024 was the year of shingles. 2025, it seems, is pneumonia and sepsis. Yey! I'm in the hospital and doing fine. I've been feeling rubbish for over a week and assumed it was flu. At least now I'm on IV antibiotics and in the right hands. It's not the productive start I planned for 2025!

#Elasticsearch 8.17 has been released and here are some of my favorite features the team has delivered: the logsdb index mode, the new Elastic rerank model and full-text search support for ES|QL. ⤵️

Won another CI battle today. Slowly ticked off the things causing failures. Tests are now green!!

After an intense week of coding and CI problem solving, I'm ready for the weekend and a rest. That said, I'm off to indoor soft play with dad friends and three 2 year old tomorrow, so I'll be getting my exercise in with no real rest! Might manage a cup of coffee if the toddlers permit it! 😀

I won a week long war of attrition with CI build issues while updating our Elastic Distribution of OpenTelemetry SDK to #dotnet 9. Ended up being several small things happening coincidentally at the same time that made it painful.

I got out a "new" notepad this morning. A blast from the past! Does anyone else remember this place fondly?

Made some good progress this week on tweaks to the Elastic Transport API in support of our Ingest library work. Also hits some walls in other repositories with strange CI failures and also failed attempts to switch to the #dotnet 9 SDK requiring more investigation.

A shard is a #lucene instance that runs on a node, that's part of a cluster, and is replicated for fault tolerance. If that didn't make 100% sense - we now have a 10 minute video explaining #elastic infrastructure. (it's basically a super efficient library with librarians on roller skates?)

NHS Hospital car parking is a rip-off, especially when many visitors are sick or visiting sick patients. I dropped in for a routine blood test today. In the past, there were 30 mins free for such scenarios. That's been removed, so 12 mins of parking cost me £2.

It's 7 a.m., and my first PR of the day is in. It's a minor tweak and bug fix to our refined response builder enhancements in the Elastic Transport library. We now support composable response builders configured per transport and per request to support custom response handling.

Up at 5.30 today to get some tax return chores finally sorted. I just want to code!

In other news. We finally had full fibre to the house! It looks like it's time for some small-scale home networking. I currently have powerline networking, so I'm getting ~300 Mbps upstairs in my office vs. 67 previously. Tempted to look at running Gb ethernet up at some point.

It was a frustrating day today. Something relatively simple got complicated, and I lost several hours trying to identify the root cause. I gave up at 2 pm so I can come at it fresh tomorrow. I chose to work some more on our Elastic ingest enhancements to let the creative juices flow.

I'm up early and updating Visual Studio, ready for #dotnet 9 GA bits! I will catch up on some #dotnetconf news while I wait!
