Unfortunately, 4 horses just leapfrogged Baeza on the Derby leaderboard: Burnham Square (130), East Avenue (60), and River Thames (50), and Render Judgment (39)

Wild finish to the Blue Grass as Burnham Square just gets up over a very game East Avenue. The runner-up might have been best considering the pace, but Burnham Square did go very wide. Seems doubtful we just saw the Derby winner.

Journalism had every reason to lose that race after getting stopped on the far turn, but he found another gear to run down Baeza. The runner-up obviously ran huge. I really hope 37.5 points is enough to get in the Derby.

I feel like many aren't aware of this rule change to Derby qualification (I wasn't): Two (2) Derby invitations get extended to the leaders of the Euro/Middle East Road to the Derby, and that doesn't count a horse like Flood Zone who already qualified via America.

That ride on Cornucopian was perplexing. And that’s being kind.

Tappan Street broke sharply and always traveled like a winner of this race. Light on seasoning but talented. Franco did a pretty good job of saving ground from a tough post on Sovereignty. He didn't have quite the same kick today, but it's not like winning was imperative.

I'm starting to warm to the idea of Cornucopian being in this year's Kentucky Derby. Perhaps even hoping for it.

Fun Fact: Tiztasitic, American Promise, and Chancer McPatrick all debuted in the same July 27 (Jim Dandy day) maiden race at Saratoga.

Love that Chunk of Gold has qualified for the Derby. He's a $2,500 yearling purchase with a funky way of going, but he just keeps showing up. Ran pretty well considering that he moved early and the pace completely fell apart late.

Tiztastic wanted to the distance more than the others, but also got a great setup and ride. This long-striding son of Tiz the Law finally wins on the dirt. There were clearly quite a few that couldn't cope with that ambitious pace.
