We covered arithmetic sequences and series in my honors sophomore class today. A bunch of them said “thanks for planning something easy for today!” 1) I’d argue they aren’t always “easy”, they’re just very intuitive 😁 2) We just got done covering rational functions, so I guess I’d agree 🤣 ♾️

I love the big puzzles in the NYT Thanksgiving weekend issue! Some of these are very difficult (I don’t even know where to start with some of the other ones 😅) but I love that they’re excellent examples of logic and counterexamples!! #ITeachMath ♾️

We’re doing underground staff spirit week this week because I needed something to get through this full week of school so I decided to make it happen 😁 Day 1 was blackout and it was a success! It’s such an easy and fun way to bring the staff together 👏 #iTeachMath

I listen to a podcast called Fantasy Fangirls and they are currently doing a deep dive on the last ACOTAR book, which involves a character climbing up/down a spiral staircase. Each episode the hosts use math to figure out how many miles she walks up and down the stairs, and it’s amazing 🤣 ♾️

Yesterday I introduced my freshmen to the Puzzle a Day on Polypad and they were both obsessed with the puzzle AND polypad, and I guess that means I should be incorporating more of both! #iTeachMath♾️

Okay so it’s actually going so much better than it past years?? One of the differences is that I have higher expectations for this group than I have in past years. After teaching this class a few times, I’ve learned they can give me more. I’ve also connected to their prior learning much better.

Sometimes I feel like I’m speeding through content in my honors class without doing anything meaningful. But then today we got to discover the special right triangle relationships and it was such a joy to watch them discover patterns 🥹 #iTeachMath ♾️

Gave one of my fav assessments today! I use this for our volume/SA unit for my honors sophomores. Students work in table groups to complete a menu math a la @natbanting.bsky.social. After completing that with their groups, they do an individual portion with 3 carefully chosen prompts. #ITeachMath

For our circles unit summative, I had students choose a problem from a list of problems where they have to solve for multiple segments and angles in circles and explain their work on flip grid. I LOVE hearing them explain their thinking!! And with tablets this year it’s even easier 👏🏻 #mtbos

We’re trying out something new for finals this year. All the students in our core math classes are retaking their lowest unit summative score from the semester as the final. Its not quite as good as SBG and assessing multiple times would be, but it’s a step in the right direction! #mtbos #ITeachMath

Will never regret doing a Choice Board for the last assessment of the semester 👏🏻 it’s saving my sanity this week and the students get a choice in how they show their learning!
