just as well to compose a poem by collecting what you see over time as it is to sit down and write something that just happens to fall into lines

poem is a tool for finding out, not a vessel to fill with the known

publishing is not the most important part of it

whether I think I'm part of a tradition or not, I am, so I may as well set about trying to perceive and name it and to understand the work that makes it up

it's good to say poems out loud

people who make poems in general make them very deliberately, but not every reader reads every poem deliberately. deliberate reading is hard work and has to be practiced with care. this is one use for the classroom/workshop in all its forms

poem does just mean "make" (my license with the Greek but still)

it's good to remember that poems are material things, made from the material (not metaphor!) that language is

epiphany alone is not "a poem"

loving the poets of the past is not, or shouldn't be, the same as worshipping them

poetry doesn't need governors or border guards

I like my poems best when they are #airy & light, in a #contemporarylanguage, #LessEmbellished, but anyway #open for the reader to insert themselves. That's when I look at them with a sigh of 'that's it'. Of course, copying styles can teach one a lot, but that has never made me as happy.

Drawing from the history of Renga linked poetry, there are certain verses that had certain functions (like the hokku, wakiku, ageku etc) but the verses without function, are called HIRAKU 'flat, ordinary' verses. These are verses where nature/humanity, reality/imagination mingle freely.
