Selling my photo zines this Saturday

The energy I bring to the holidays. Resting grouch face, barely awake. (No, I don’t want to wait to share a nice looking version, you get a janky phone photo of the back of my camera.)

There comes a time when every photographer embraces that great images don’t have to be tack sharp to be great. It’s about composition, storytelling, feeling, observation. What I’m trying to say is yes, I definitely just shot all afternoon on a gloomy day with OIS accidentally switched off.

I can’t come to work today, it’s raining and I want to take pictures of puddles and lights reflecting off the wet pavement.

Been playing with some Minolta manual lenses and mixing different focusing with the lenses interesting bokeh. The b&w image has some interesting pinhole camera effects from shooting through a leaf that a bug chewed a bunch of holes through.

Sometimes you try to get a photo of a streetcar moving crisply through the street with a blurred background and instead get an abstract image of a light painting with ghost legs. A case where the mistake is infinitely more interesting than what was intended.

Photos from traveling, some of the best don't really work on itty bitty phone screens, so l'll save those for a future print project. I'll be at Zinecinnati in October, come say hi! Gave some new gear a test drive on Friday. Getting back to something with halfway decent autofocus is nice for some more layered and out of eye-line moments.

A handful of my poems that I hope, one day, won’t feel so relevant. Defunding scientists doesn’t make the climate crisis go away. Empathy is not just a virtue; it’s the best virtue. Feed Gaza. Stop the genocide. Due process is for every person. Healthcare, shelter, and food are basic human rights.

Finally made it to the American Sign Museum and practiced with some double exposures, intentional camera movement, and messing with focus to make some more experimental images. A zine of neon and pinball machines (another subject l've used these techniques on) would be a ton of fun to put together.

In my new novel, a man is killed by a city bus and a crow on a "no parking" sign undoes his death and gives him an acorn. After that, things get weirder. Yet, it's a very human story about loving nature and finding home/family. Interested? Early orders can really contribute to a book's success.

Haven't been able to take many photos or work on anything new recently. Here's a few from months past.

Finally made it out to the newly remodeled Cincinnati Library Downtown branch a few weeks back.

I’ll be at the Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center Creative Cafe tomorrow June 6th from 7-10pm. I have a bunch of new framed and unframed prints I’ll be selling for the first time along with all 5 issues of my photography zine. Come say hi!

Being around for two different periodical cicada emergences in a handful of years is pretty awesome. Scream on my red-eyed friends. Scream on.

Halftone Zine Fest May 17th! Two great shows down for this spring, and I’m super pumped for Halftone since I’ll be debuting Ambient Curiosity 3. Issue 3’s title is Chromatic Adoration, and it’s a selection of photos with each featuring a different color of the rainbow.

Do I sign up for zine festivals because I want an excuse to make table displays out of old suitcases, junk cardboard boxes, and cassette tape containers? ….no comment. (I actually go because the people who table and attend are pretty universally awesome and I want to be like them 😋)
