In the 1890s, tariffs reduced government income, increased government expenditure, and undercut foreign investors’ confidence in U.S. reliability, leading to catastrophic effects for ordinary Americans. Tariffs haven't changed.

Trump Loves the 1890s But He’s Clueless About Them
The tariffs he keeps babbling about didn’t make that decade great. They helped usher in a depression.

It could mean that the world financial system melts down when investors realize that Elon Musk may selectively default on US debt. Just saying.

why are you still honouring Elon Musk with a Fellowship of your society? He and his cronies are tearing down US science, blocked USAid that’ll result in the deaths of thousands from disease, and supports the Far Right. Why still honour him?? 🔭🧪⚛️

There are many stories for why we don't fasten the bottom-most button on a tailored jacket. The most widely repeated is that some king once got fat and stopped fastening this button, so his courtiers followed. Maybe this is true; maybe not. Who knows.

Always regret not writing more on mechanics of broadcasting in old job. Anyway, I *did not know* that the reason BBC Radio 4 still broadcasts on long wave in 2025 is that it secretly carries the Economy 7 signal for cheap overnight power on old electricity meters.

Superstar interviewer John Fortune died on New Year's Eve just over 11 years ago. Here is one of his most entertaining interviews - with Eurosceptic MP Sir George Parr, 20 years before the Brexit referendum:-

The 21st of December was the feast of St Thomas the Apostle. On this day, the poor went 'Thomasing,’ asking for food and money. At Penmorfa, a board records the money distributed to the parish poor on December 21st. Many of our churches have similar benefaction boards.

this appears to be the only photo of the first version of a four-engined triplane bomber that the Voisin Company were developing in 1915 by this time, some aircraft had enclosed cockpits - but few as sleek as this!? note also the very pleasing engine cowlings, and the inverted-V radiators 1/2
