In this open access article, @yulengzeng.bsky.social (University of Groningen) and @andduer.bsky.social (@unisalzburg.bsky.social) examine how economic sanctions affect the relative military spending of targeted states, drawing on data from 166 countries between 1962 and 2015.

Happy to announce a new publication with @yulengzeng.bsky.social in the Journal of Peace Research. We show that sanction shocks lead to a short-term increase in *relative* military spending in the target states. The paper is available open access at: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....

I've seen many issues linked to trade agreements, but this seems a first... It should be clear by now that one cannot seriously negotiate with the current US administration.

Anybody tell him that the US could also try a different approach, i.e., put maximum pressure on Russia so it has an incentive to negotiate seriously? Everyone with a bit of an understanding of negotiations understood that the approach by the current US admin was not going to work

Russia and North Korea come to mind... And the problem is: by the time Trump is done, there will be Vance, and at this stage it's difficult to imagine free and fair elections in 4 years.

I fear that in the past authoritarianism was "mostly boring and tolerable" bc there was a strong counterforce in the world. With that counterforce gone, there is less of a need to pretend to uphold certain norms and hence we'll see more that is maddening and intolerable

I see this very similar. Unfortunately, having all EU countries pull in the same direction on defence policy is impossible. EU Commission should participate as observer so that the intergov. approach is coordinated with what the EU does (e.g., in terms of industrial policy, allowing state aid etc.)
