Writing todo tests, implementing the test one at a time and seeing them work (fail correctly), then implementing the real thing in production code and seeing the test turn green is such a dopamine rush I cannot understand how anyone doesn’t immediately embrace #TDD. Best drug I’ve found yet!

Teachers of good programming practices promote “refactoring” but in reality programming is a race. Those who write a pattern FIRST get praise while those who refactor AFTER have to defend why they didn’t follow the established pattern. No wonder code quality is so terrible across the industry.

This is spot on. AI does surprisingly well generating PR summaries based on a "git format-patch" but it can only understand the patchset itself not the wider context which is why a review from AI is more often terrible.

There's a similar phenomenon going on with programming. When you write it yourself, the code resembles your own thought process, your own understanding, your own organizational habits. AI gives you something else. Something you didn't internalize. Something you can't fix, or extend, or improve.

@davefarley77.bsky.social peers keep telling me that «refactoring code» is risky and that the exercise of doing so can easily fall below the risks introduced. But all the info you and others (like @martinfowler.com ) all seem to infer that refactoring is designed to be safe. Am I missing something?
