17. An excellent read, hugely researched and wrote at a pace that almost makes it novel like. Gerry Adams does not come across well at all. The television adaptation is great as well

New albums I've listened to this year. 1. The Coral - 388 Another excellent album by one of the best bands of their time. It still has the classic sound they've always had but what makes them ingenious is the way they've incorporated other influences, particularly rocksteady

16. The most harrowing book I've ever read and a damming indictment of the lack of action from the West in the war and genocide in Bosnia (Maass is particularly and rightfully scathing of America and Clinton). A brilliantly written and very human account of war

15. Another excellent collection of short stories from Roy (aka PJ Smith). The stories are all sharply observed and manage to be dark and yet funny at the same and are full of characters who feel very much real

14. A stunning debut novel from Stu Hennigan which provides an incredibly dark and unflinching look into class, addiction, masculinity and the pressures of everyday life. A very heavy and bleak read, but definitely worth it

13. An interesting collection of short stories that offer an insight into the lives of working class and sometimes underclass people told in a flow of consciousness manner. Whilst this is great for an insight into the characters some of the stories don't really go anywhere

12. A decent enough addition to the 33 1/3 series but not one of my favourites either. It felt more like a book about the experience of seeing Suicide live rather than about the album the book is supposed to be about

11. An excellent read. Montague fully immerses himself in the ultras movement around the world and provides a fascinating look into their culture and politics. It's an honest read and doesn't shy away from the dark aspects (violence, racism etc.) but isn't sensationalist either

10. A great, honest and very relevant debut novel from Connor Hutchinson that looks into the dark side of gambling addiction

9. The parts of this books about Heron growing up and his early music career are excellent but I found that much of the later sections rambled on a bit. This is understandable as the books put together via old manuscripts but it still didn't make for an easy or engaging read

Mike Joyce. Brilliant drummer and a lovely man as well

8. A very worthwhile read but also a very heavy book (not unexpected considering the main theme of the book is suicide) and it's also wrote in a very non-linear style that might not be for everyone. The bleakness of the book is startling but there is also a warmth about it
