9. The parts of this books about Heron growing up and his early music career are excellent but I found that much of the later sections rambled on a bit. This is understandable as the books put together via old manuscripts but it still didn't make for an easy or engaging read

8. A very worthwhile read but also a very heavy book (not unexpected considering the main theme of the book is suicide) and it's also wrote in a very non-linear style that might not be for everyone. The bleakness of the book is startling but there is also a warmth about it

7. A truly horrific but also fascinating read and a book that a huge amount of meticulous research has went into. The book reads not just as a story of Arkan's evil life but it also brilliantly captures Eastern Europe during the times he lived through

6. A book set in my beloved Lake District that truly captures the beauty of the area as well as the harshness and bleakness of it, something which is very much reflected in the storyline which is downright brutal

5. A book considered to be a classic but I definitely wouldn't class it as such. It's strong point is the style of writing in capturing an essence of times and places, but it falls down as it's repetitive and nearly every character is massively unlikeable (Dean was detestable)

January. Usually one of the worst months of the year but it's actually turned out to be a good one

4. An excellent read about the history of a genre of music I didn't know much about previously. Hancox also provides a fascinating look into the political and social conditions that provided the backdrop to grime which although can be heavy going is absolutely worth sticking with
