Okay this was on Netflix so I decided to revisit it. At the time I didn’t think much of it, as I thought it landed somewhere between Tarantino/Trainspotting knock off and a teen drama. And it still kinda does, but I enjoyed this revisit tbh.

People saying that Backrooms isn’t horror but a psychological thriller really don’t understand either genre especially the latter. In fact the “genre” it most resembles is what for a brief period in publishing was referenced as “slipstream”.

If you told me I would not only enjoy but actually kind of love a film directed by a 20 year old YouTuber originally inspired by an anonymous Reddit post I wouldn’t believe you. But yeah me and Gareth went and caught this and both enjoyed it a lot.
