Wine (@[email protected]) 2023 Funaro Nero d'Avola Sicilia Sicily, Italy 14% ABV $20.99 / 88 One-hour decant. Nose of black cherry and black plum. Translucent medium purple in the Riedel Extreme Cab glasses with a pink rim. Served at 67º F / 19.4º C. Prominent legs. Slate, unripe dark fruit, baking spice and chili pepper, possibly a dried chile de árbol, on the palate. Sinewy medium tannins and somewhat muted acidity. That chili pepper comes on a bit more after a few minutes. That’s an interesting flavor that I’m not sure I’ve experienced before (not a criticism). Dry, medium-bodied and bold. On Day 2 after a further twenty-one hour decant, I had a second glass with food. Nero d'Avola is supposed to go nicely with hearty meat dishes, but that’s not what we were having (Fish stew and rice, Roasted delicata squash, Kale and potato casserole and Kale salad with sweet potatoes). The wine goes better than I expected with the Fish stew (which has tomatoes in it but is fairly hearty). Not stellar, but fine. More acidic with both the Kale and potato casserole and the delicata squash. Definitely a no-go with the Kale salad. This is our second time having Nero d'Avola, and it’s a definite winner (both the varietal and this particular expression). Try some if you like medium-bodied bold reds.
