There's definitely a trend. I suppose when reality is dark, writing seeks to keep ahead of that desire. Most of the calls ask for weird, bold, edge that guts. Quiet stories can do that too. I don't mind persnickety language nor looking up an obscure reference.

I've felt the pressure (& succumbed) to writing easily consumed pieces at one time or another. Those instances are the exceptions and not the rule.

I love poems that make me think. Fiction that challenges my perceptions. I don't like when hubris masquerades as lofty obtuse nonsense. But, IMHO that's probably only .00001% of writing. So keep it weird and challenging because it will linger in one person's mind.

Context is everything. Storytelling is not a one-sided endeavor. It's a conversation, a jump-off point. If you miss that, you miss the best parts of reading.

Not sure how to celebrate lesbian visibility week.

What I don't understand is how books get banned for "problematic themes," yet most streaming services & virtually all social platforms are full of problematic content. The only difference is when reading, there tends to be greater nuance in how its processed. idk
