So I’ve finished the manuscript of How to Navigate your child or teen through to trauma recovery. It’s a 94,000 word book that means I need to really write a part 2. But I’m excited. I hope it will bring hope to many when it comes out! ❤️

It’s important when we look at defensive mechanisms and trauma symptoms to always remember how much courage it took for people to survive the trauma. Let’s never pity people but always authentically show respect for them for surviving difficult and terrifying ordeals.

Trauma recovery can honestly change the whole world… if only people knew it was possible. It changes mindsets, systems,identities, strategies and financial plans. But so many people don’t even know it’s possible…

I’ve been on holiday for 7 whole days without any children for the first time in 26 years! I needed more books to read- I’m so used to taking unread ones home! Me and Mr deT enjoying peace, calm and quiet. Very excited to see 3 out of 4 of our sons tomorrow! ❤️📚🏝️

Well that’s been a few weeks! I’ve trained in Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, Oxford and Bath. Had meetings online and in Edinburgh with incredible people all seeking strategy help around trauma informed care. I’ve supervised, line managed and supported staff who are amazing. 🌍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🚙

Last night we walked along the beach with the most beautiful sunset! Chatted and pondered and felt deeply grateful for the opportunity to breathe the sea air. #grateful 🌊🌊

We need to see change. So many trauma informed practitioners have no understanding of the existence and presentation of complex trauma which is the same as being a first aider and giving paracetamol to all without knowing it could be cancer. The most traumatised are being hurt.

4/3! We need more nurses and doctors trained in trauma informed/ trauma specialist help. They are the professionals who are regulated as a clinician but have had to take a specific route in trauma recovery training& practice and can now lead trauma recovery work confidently.

3/3 The word trauma informed has become a word is being used without any appropriate checks to validate understanding & practice. This leaves our most traumatised people without hope for recovery &no one seems to be raising this as a matter of significant ethical responsibility.

2/3 It’s not hierarchical- just like if you give birth - the ideal professional would be a midwife- not a consultant or anaesthetist- because your hope to be able to go through a natural and normal process of birth and recovery with the most specialised professional for that.

1/2. I released this at the @Trauma_recovery conference last week. We need a trauma route that is like oncology with different roles working together. Everyone should be a first aider. Paramedics have done life saving training & are needed everywhere to help in crisis….

I’m remembering to tweet something! I loved speaking yesterday to 800 women about trauma and hope in The Netherlands and today I’m the hotel room I enjoyed training another cohort from @SaferLondon1 about the impact of trauma. Now it’s time to head back to the UK! ✈️ 🧠

This unprocessed trauma reaction can be really deeply distressing and can even make people avoid others to avoid the possible automatic reactions. That can then lead to isolation and loneliness, which then exacerbates the feelings of fear. Trauma recovery is a process! Xx
