Last night's film, DEATH BY HANGING. Lives up to its reputation. A critique of Japan's attitudes to corporal punishment that mocks the authorities. Blackly humorous and absurd but makes serious points.

Last night's film, THIS NIGHT I'LL POSSESS YOUR CORPSE. The 2nd Coffin Joe film; it's bigger, badder, and better than the 1st. More gothic horror with a hint of Frankenstein. The depiction of hell is amazing.

The first film, AT MIDNIGHT I'LL TAKE YOUR SOUL, is a fairly conventional horror. Coffin Joe is a nihilistic murderer in a small town. I think the next film gets weirder.

Starting on the Coffin Joe boxset tonight. A genuine icon of Brazilian horror cinema. I'm intrigued by what I've read about these films but we'll see...
