#Logroño old town has some pretty nice corners

Very quiet in #Logroño yesterday evening, with many locals out of town and a lot of people watching football.

Am beginning to wonder if #temperatures in #Logroño will ever return to normal. (long term average daily max for Logroño is 30.5ºC)

1/2 This "sur lies" Assyrtiko is a fave off of Santorini, from Evia. Solid in the mid-palate, fresh with a hint of stones, it adds ripe fruit and a tasty finish. It has the concentration to hold up to most typical foods. This is a cut above, not a low-end imitation. In that regard, mid-$30s.

Checking on our #vines, after last night's #storms in La #Rioja and around. So far so good.

Fun night in #Logroño

There are a lot of factors to take into account when assessing #vineyards, but in general in NW #Rioja I like the breezy ones on slopes, rather than valley bottom ones, which can be a bit humid. In other regions those might be the ones you want, as every drop of water may count.

Always interesting to see the effects of #oak #barrels on #wine. Same wine, same barrel producer, but US v. French and different toasting. It's hard to come up with a recipe that always works, I think you just have to keep trying and see what's best with each wine. #Rioja

Warm night in #Logroño #Spain

I'm sure that's true, but I get the impression that #Sonsierra was well-run. I think that the scale of the #wine downturn is really big and apart from total blue chips, perhaps nobody is immune. But I also think that fashions are cyclical, so those who can hang on may be ok in 10-15 years..?

Another #winery goes bust in #Rioja Painful as it will be, I guess this is what the sector needs. Less vineyards and less wineries.

Out having a quick look at our #vineyards today. Unsurprisingly, given the winter rains and prolonged warm weather in #Rioja and much of #Spain, they are pretty advanced and I imagine it will be another early harvest.

1/2 This '09 Ramnista is all Xinomavro. It needed age, shows great now. It still opens tight, a little old school,with acidity and grip. 30-40 minutes of air to evolve,open and become more harmonious helps.Then, earthy, complex, crisp and wonderfully fresh, a beautifully balanced red with finesse.

Excellent, thought-provoking, and going against the grain as per usual. Well-worth a read re. Bordeaux and the (lack of) weather connection in 2025. For what it's worth our Riojas were low alcohol in 2025, probably a bit too low. There was an Indian summer, but we were mostly all picked by then.

Classic north breeze conditions today in #Rioja. 22ºC / 72ºF in Samaniego at 4pm but 27ºC / 81ºF in the valley bottom just 200m (600ft) lower.
