#BlackHistoryMonth Mary Seacole held close ties with the soldiers from the 97th or Earl of Ulster’s Regiment (The Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment). She nursed them during their time in Jamaica and travelled to the Crimea to help her ‘old friends’ who were fighting there.

#OnThisDay in 2004 Sgt Terrance “Tommo” Thomson, 1 PWRR won the CGC for his gallant actions during his service in Iraq. “His actions were an inspiration to his men and the remainder of the company over what was an especially difficult period and is worthy of the highest possible recognition.”

This medal was washed up on the beach at Rhyl, North Wales in about 1970. It belonged to Pte Harold Davenport who served with the #Middlesex Regiment, East Lancashire Regiment and the #Tank Regiment. We are unsure how his #WW1 victory #medal ended up on the Welsh beach. #pwrr

Pte Donald Rose signed up in July 1940 with the Territorial Army Bn the 1/7th #Queens Royal Regiment. Don survived the war and at the grand age of 110 he is now in a care home where the regiment stay in touch. To celebrate #VEDay Don has taken part in an interview for the #BBC ‘One Show’. #pwrr

#VEDAY80 As a nod to our links with Denmark we wanted to share this- On the evening of 4th May every year Danish Houses place lit candles in their windows to recognise Liberation Day. The lit candles symbolise the removal of blackout curtains after Denmark was liberated from German occupation.

This is one of 106 scarves #crocheted by Her Majesty Queen Mary for the troops during #WWII. Her Majesty was Colonel in Chief of The Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey) from 1937 until her death in 1953.

#didyouknow The 97th Foot or The Earl of Ulster’s Regiment were raised on this day in 1824 to increase the army intake at a time 80% of the troops were serving overseas. #Funfact the 97th had the nickname ‘Celestials’ thanks to their sky-blue facings.

Drummer John Dixon joined The Queen’s (Second) Royal Regiment of Foot 18th March 1820. He had already been in military service for 13 years with The King’s Own Royal Regiment 4th of Foot. He waited a whole day after being discharged to join the Queen’s. He continued to serve until, he was 43.
