It’s not simply important to denounce political violence because it looks bad not to. It’s the right thing to do on the merits. Even more specifically to this moment it’s important because the forces of fascism are inherently better at political violence than the forces of civic democracy.

Watched Kurosawa's High and Low last night to prep for Spike Lee's version. I had never seen this film before--a riveting black and white noir, with one startling splash of color, dynamic camera work, and a fervid Dostoevskyan intensity to the performances. Highly recommended.

Thanks to all for the condolences on my dad's death. Reading the obits and reflecting on his life, I can't help but be humbled and proud in equal measure. It's astonishing to think that he wrote his last newspaper column in 2022, at age 95.
