What’s wrong with these viral typography tips? I get it, it’s a popular format that drives engagement. But as a type designer, I can tell you: following this kind of advice blindly can hurt your typography. Below are 4 strategies for setting letter spacing that will help improve your design work.

This is a classic example of optical correction for intersecting lines in font design. To make the diagonal appear straight at the center of the cross, the type designer slightly breaks and shifts it inward.

Airbnb just unveiled their new typeface. For iconic companies, creating custom fonts isn’t just a design choice, it’s a strategic one. When all you have is black text on a white background, a distinctive typeface becomes one of the most powerful ways to stand out.

Arguing over whether 16px font size is better than 15 or 17 doesn’t really make sense: Inter and Times New Roman at the same font size will produce different actual character heights anyway. Use any font size, even decimals, as long as the text is large enough to read comfortably.

It seems to happen every time—I always overkern on the first go. In Glyphs, all the character pairs look great. But then I check the proofing text, and there it is: overkerned. This morning started with undoing all the kerning I did yesterday 😅

Designing a uniwidth typeface family is such a challenge, I don’t think I’ll take on another one anytime soon 😅

When I was starting out with my first typeface, I kept hearing seasoned designers say, “Type design isn’t for everyone.” Years later, after countless hours drawing letters, I can say they were right—it’s not for everyone. But it’s definitely right for me.

Remember Origami Studio? I just imagined how its node-based UI would look set in Innovator Grotesk.

What makes a great product great? It’s the attention to detail. In addition to the short-hook f, Innovator Grotesk features a short-tail j. This short-tail j automatically appears when it follows characters like g, j, q, ą, and į to prevent overlap.

A subtle feature of Innovator Grotesk is the short-hook ‘f’. It automatically replaces the regular ‘f’ to prevent overlap with wide accents—and it works for ligatures too.

What if Innovator Grotesk were used in iOS?

Ligatures in fonts are not just a remedy for colliding letter parts, like the tops of ‘f’ and ‘i’; they are a distinct form of art.

Italics in Innovator Grotesk are obliques—slanted and optically corrected upright letters. The only letter that changes its design is 'f', which switches to a long-tail shape in obliques.

I love how all kinds of technical information—full of numbers and special symbols—looks when set in Innovator Grotesk.
