Had only a few minutes to chat with the incomparable Boots Riley to talk about his new movie I LOVE BOOSTERS (which hits theatres tomorrow) and it felt like a meal. In just a few minutes we talked about class warfare, worker exploitation, his love for science fiction, and a bunch more.

Back during the TIFF Next Wave Festival, I was able to see Oscar Boyson's controversial and SUPER bleak black comedy OUR HERO, BALTHAZAR, and I just had to talk to him about it. No idea about a Canadian release for this, but it is currently making its way through the US.

It's a big week for interviews on my end, so here's another one (and not actually the last one). This is a talk with actor Nicholas Braun (a.k.a. Cousin Greg on Succession) about his role in the atypical murder mystery THE SHEEP DETECTIVES, which hits theatres today.

Here's a look at the Tibetan-Canadian drama 100 Sunset, a mystery that's not about trying to solve something, but rather in terms of finding identity. Opens at The Revue starting today, and it has been kinda underestimated in terms of what it's able to accomplish.

I love, love, love Damian Mc Carthy's Irish thriller HOKUM, which hits theatres tomorrow. A spooky movie that loves genre tropes, but has enough great ideas of its own, a sense of storytelling playfulness, and the best performance yet from Adam Scott.

New episode of the review show up with looks at Mile End Kicks, Wasteman, Amrum, The Christophers, Lorne, and Lee Cronin's The Mummy. Four of these are pretty damn good. One of these is meh. One of these is something unfathomably awful. Good luck skipping around the video to figure which is which.

If you're in the Toronto or Scarborough area this weekend, the best new release in theatres is the microbudget thriller SWAY, which is a taut, dialogue driven B-movie noir with a good deal of style and solid performances. A real low key gem. At Morningside and Yonge and Dundas.

Here's a look at Simón Mesa Soto's amusingly ironic comedy/drama A POET, which starts stronger than it ends, but is still worth a watch. Opens in select cities today.

Bouncing back from being sick the past week to talk about why Luc Besson's DRACULA is frustratingly pointless. Opens in North American theatres this weekend.

Over on the Sundance side of my coverage, I take a look at the very funny romantic comedy CHASING SUMMER, which teams up star/writer Iliza Shlesinger with boundary pushing indie filmmaker Josephine Decker and yields great results.

Also over on YouTube, a talk with actress and writer Camille Wormser and director Alec Goldberg about their pilot episode of SOFT BOIL, which premiered in Sundance's first ever Episodic Pilot Showcase.

The new Jason Statham movie SHELTER is everything you think it's going to be, but on the good side of what you think it's going to be. Opens in theatres this Friday.

Although I think it would work better at a tight 85 minutes (or even better as a Tales from the Crypt episode), Sam Raimi's darkly comedic survival thriller SEND HELP manages to be a lot of fun. In theatres everywhere Friday.

Crazy week over here between life stuff, regular work stuff, and Sundance prep, but I wanted to point out a delightful chat I had with filmmakers Dusty Mancinelli and Madeleine Siws-Fewer and actors Grace Glowicki and Ben Petrie about the thriller HONEY BUNCH, in Canadian cinemas starting today.

This week has started off with a broken tooth, food poisoning, a death in the family, and the continued collapse of society. But good news, I have Friday off.
