Going to go on a rant here for a second… This is the scariest point for me, which is the normalization of ICE activity and the desensitization to these abductions as they happen more sporadically and at lower profile. Last year was a mess, it created a spectacle, but now it’s just everyday.

The goal has always been to normalize the presence of armed, militarized forces in our public spaces. Today it’s Ohare. November is the polls. The time to act is now.

The economic cost of a federal death penalty case has been estimated to be over 1 million dollars. This means we’re standing at a crossroads-one path leads to unnecessary waste of resources to carry out a cruel and unusual punishment. That’s the optimistic path.

Perhaps it’s a good thing that the need was not great enough to qualify more of us for that work. But here we are.

We have arrived at a point in our American experiment where indigent federal defendants are entitled to the assistance of two attorneys who are specifically qualified fo accept death penalty cases. I’m not one of these attorneys-I know some who are, but there are not nearly enough of them.

We received some guidance from the Federal Defender to prepare us for a “significant increase in death penalty cases” here in Chicago. It is impossible to overstate how demoralizing this inevitability feels.

The max penalty here is intentional because with a 20 year max, there is an automatic presumption of detention that the defendant must then overcome with some evidence that s/he is not a danger to the community/risk of nonappearance. By statute this a low burden, in practice, it’s hard to overcome.

Seems like if Musk really wanted to eliminate government wastefulness he’d poke around the pentagon and “streamline” their spending instead of fucking around with all the payments we rely on. He could probably also make sure he personally benefits from DOD contracts too.
