artworks aren't puzzles to be solved and artists aren't automatons adhering strictly to the cultural average of their time and place, you don't know their secrets or what game they might be playing

I knew someone studding art history at uni who would say that they could know the historic and geographic context of any painting just from the information contained within and like, no you can't, everything requires specific knowledge to be properly unravelled, there are things you'll never know

in my experience, developing a complex and open minded understanding of artworks and the context of their creation, is sometimes a different discipline to Art History the academic subject, and occasionally actively opposed, but what do I know about it I'm just some daftie on the internet
