This is a whole thing right now. Lots of people with power and privilege using the oppressed as a shield to justify their inaction—when the oppressed are actually already very much in the fight and need solidarity and support to strengthen their actions.

When I was taking my first undergraduate sociology course, there was a bell hooks reading and it was the first reading in college where this lower class student felt like I could immediately understand what was being said by the writer. bell hooks had an amazing gift for communicating.

I feel like I should not have to say this from a country whose government is currently attacking and killing its own citizens because of bigotry, but quick reminder that governing bodies are often wrong and policies rarely line up with ethics or scientific reality.

Dring a time when experts and trans folks both are issuing warnings about trans genocide, and queer folks in general are ever more under attack, this is acutely dangerous. If a kid isn't telling their parents something so basic, it's because they've made a risk assessment about it.

This may be new from Important Context, but this is not new information. Trans folks have been saying this ourselves for a while. I'm always glad when others speak up, and also a reminder to listen to marginalized folks.
