A Fare Free bus programme in Iowa City, USA, is a "resounding success with overwhelming support from the community", the city's Director of Transportation said. During a two-year pilot scheme (August 2023-August 2025), passenger numbers rose by 68%.

Today, fares for tube, rail and DLR journeys in London will go up by 6% (and so will journeys by River Bus and the cable car across the Thames). Putting public transport fares up in London is a political choice and it’s the wrong one.

Bad news coming our way on Sunday. Fares for tube, rail and DLR journeys in London are going up by 6% – part of an agreement between City Hall and the government that they will keep rising, above the rate of inflation, for the rest of the decade.

Good news from Barnsley, as under 18s are offered free bus journeys between 7am and 9pm. The scheme has been running since August 2025 and has already reached 1 million journeys, according to the BBC report. Read our thoughts here:

Glasgow has started its free public transport pilot scheme, with 1000 free transport passes (some reports say 500) given out to Glaswegians aged 22-59. Older and younger age groups are excluded because they already have free bus travel. Read more here:

The Greater Manchester transport branch of Unison, the union which is made up of workers in bus depots and offices has passed a motion supporting the principle of free public transport. And they are setting about organising a Fare Free Greater Manchester campaign.

Another step in the right direction: Greens joining the House of Commons transport cttee, and campaigners including us, to advocate free buses for under-22s. But we can, and must, think bigger and bolder, about public provision of free transport for all.

The best news is from Glasgow, where the city council will run a trial free public transport scheme – for 1000 residents, for six weeks. Hopefully the start of something bigger and bolder.

The government has said NO to free bus travel for under-22s in England, and NO to mandating a minimum service levels for buses.

Mamdani has promised to make NY buses "fast and free", plus free child care for under -5s. The win has international resonance. If New York city can consider making buses free, so can London and other big world cities.

Fare Free London and other campaign groups will keep calling for a wide-ranging review of fares that would look at universal free public transport.
