First-past-the-post killed BC United (BC Liberals) last time, as our single-winner system incentivized folding to avoid vote splitting with the Conservatives. Any new BC Liberal party must make proportional representation a priority to compete openly and secure representation.

The irony is that party leadership races demand a broader geographic appeal than a general election. First-past-the-post turns general campaigns into polarizing scrambles for a few swing ridings. Proportional representation would make broad appeal the permanent rule.

Under first-past-the-post, parties ignore seats they can't win. Proportional representation fixes this. Every vote impacts seat count, so right-leaning parties must care about cities and left-leaning parties must care about rural areas, even if they aren't dominant there.

As the US rattles Canada with annexation threats, remember their hyper-polarization is driven by first-past-the-post, the same system we use to elect our legislatures. Proportional representation would break this trend and ensure toxic two-party politics is not in our future.

We do not advocate pure PR; we recommend most often Mixed Member Proportional and Single Transferable Vote. Data shows these systems lead to moderate, majority-backed choices. Contrast that with Doug Ford's unilateral power and scandals. Facts here:

Proportional representation is the principle that 30% of the vote should equal about 30% of the seats. How would proportional representation work in Canada?

Incredible to see proportional representation highlighted so much at rallies across Ontario this past Saturday. When governments win 100% of the power with only 43% of the vote, democracy fails. Ontarians want real accountability and a modern system where every ballot counts.

The 58 MPPs who voted yes represent just 40% of voters, while the 41 who voted no represent the other 60%. Proportional representation would end this distortion of democracy and ensure provinces can no longer ride roughshod over municipalities without a broad majority consensus.

In a proportional system, Carney and Guilbeault could be in different parties, negotiating openly. Instead, first-past-the-post forced an artificial marriage where groups clashed behind closed doors until one side got crushed and forced out of government entirely.

Ford accidentally exposed how first-past-the-post rewards catering to a narrow base. Parties only need to win a few swing ridings to get a majority, even if most voters chose someone else. Proportional representation means governments must earn broad majority support.
