Funny thing… I looked up both and they had decent seasons after their hit. Fidrych’s shortened by injury. Garland amazingly went from 20 wins to 19 losses and saw his WAR go up!

I believe Seaver said he didn’t have his best stuff on this day in 1978 but that he recognized no-hitters involve some luck. He always thought his near perfect game against the Cubs in 1969 was one of his best. Have to think he had some of his best when he struck out 19 Padres (last 10) in 1970.

Loosen the purse strings.

They can eject players and managers on a whim and even have spectators removed from the proceedings. They can rule arbitrarily and often leave participants without recourse. They may do all this and not have to account for their actions.

Even at their best, human umpires have biases - some favor pitches inside, others outside, some up, some down. More importantly, they have much greater power to control the game. They can stop play in the middle of a game or order participants to play through very trying circumstances….
