9/n Why would that mitigate the presence or influence of political or ideological motives? This mix of ideological and personal, public/private motives, is true for EVERY person who commits a terrorist act, and does not mitigate ideological influence. Yes, I mean *every* person.

8/n The authors concede: “In many cases, clear ideological categorization of perpetrators is difficult.” They illustrate with the Thomas Crooks case and argue that while the attacker had personal motives, he also had “likely a mix of personal issues.” So? (the authors say nothing more about this).

7/n One serious error in the data, in my view, undermines their central claim. The authors have chosen to exclude contemporary school shootings, many of which now clearly include elements of right-wing sentiment and ideological influence. Messy? Yes. Complicated? You bet. But present? Absolutely.

6/n The central contention, that “2025 marks the first time in more than 30 years that left-wing attacks outnumber those from the far right” only holds true within a VERY narrow conditions, especially in terms of how violence from the far-right is considered, coded, and counted.

5/n The claim of a rise in left-wing attacks is based on FIVE (5) events, one of which is the Mangione shooting, classified here as a “left-wing terrorist attack.” The authors further consider the Kirk murder as an example of a left-wing terrorist attack - they say that it “seems likely.”

4/n The authors write: “From 1994 through 2000, there was an average of 0.6 left-wing incidents annually.” Rather strange way to report things - so basically, less than a single incident occurs annually.

3/n The study is trying to assert two claims, before offering potential explanations. One, that left-wing attacks are on the rise, and two, that attacks from the “violent far-right” are decreasing in frequency. Let's consider each in turn.

2/n I’ve read through CSIS study on which that article is based - www.csis.org/analysis/lef.... It claims, among many others, that “left-wing terrorist attacks [now] outnumber those from the violent far right.”
