Fife EIS Annual Business Meetings are this week. NE Fife – Tu 20th January from 4.30-5.30 pm at Bell Baxter High School; Kirkcaldy – Wed 21st January from 6-7pm at Fife House; Dunfermline – Tu 20th January from 4.30-5.30pm at Beath High School.

Fife Council are being asked to consider a £20.8 million real terms cut to school budgets by 2028-2029. Please make sure you have taken part in the ongoing budget consultation at: haveyoursay.fife.gov.uk/communities/... This consultation closes on Sunday.

We can't recruit and retain teachers with these terms and conditions. We need investment and a change to our contracts. We need to secure this through our statutory ballot. With the current political climate building towards the 2026 Scottish Elections. We cannot let the Scottish Government off the hook on their commitments. Vote YES for politicians to finally keep their promises to an overstretched teaching profession working in an under-resourced education system.

SNCT negotiations and political lobbying on workload alone haven’t and won’t lead to the outcome we need – We need to take the lead and make it happen – through a statutory ballot and industrial action if necessary. Vote YES for government and employers to do the right thing by teachers and pupils.

The surge in ASN is compounding workload for teachers. The rise in ASN needs, which is simply impossible for teachers to meet, is placing immense strain on the health and wellbeing of teachers through overwork and low morale. Vote YES for fairer funding of ASN provision.

Excessive workload and working hours are health and safety concerns as they increase the risk of serious health issues, as identified by the World Health Organisation and the International Labour Organisation. Vote YES to protect the health and safety of teachers.

This report from the OECD confirms how few teachers there are per pupil in Scotland. Winning reduced class contact time would mean employing extra teachers, many of whom are already trained but without permanent jobs. We think this report is on the shelf with the elves. #su4qe

Quality learning and teaching requires quality professional development, planning and curriculum making time. We can have the best and most ambitious curriculum but without ☝🏼, it won't make a difference. Govt needs to fulfill its promises of increased non contact time to allow this to happen.

Day 2 of Report On The Shelf, The National Conversation found a real desire amongst teachers to have a great education system but a concern the system could change with so little time and so many initatives. Reduced contact time could allow teachers to lead the changes we need.

For those of you starting Elf On The Shelf today, we're featuring the Scot Gov tradition of Report On The Shelf. This usually features a piece of research recommending more investment which is then put on a shelf. In 2020 we needed more time. Workload has got worse since then.

A red line for the EIS is that the 90 mins reduction in contact time must be given to teachers to use for preparing lessons and assessment. This time would solely be directed by the teacher in order to help with the huge workload. Please put your ballot in the post today #su4qe @eisunion
