It's kind of ironic to hear people complain about a movie or show being "too cliched", because I feel a lot of criticisms have become extremely cliche! "This is tonally inconsistent" "This character is too mean and a bad role model" "They really had to do this joke or plot point I don't like?"

To be clear, this film isn't cancelled. Heck, it was never greenlit for full production. Genndy just leaked this test out, even saying he 'could be fired' over it, to see if the support can be rallied to get the ball rolling, either at Sony or another funding party. Very bold of him, gotta say.

There’s a reason Buzz and Woody’s expressions are so meme-able. XD

Despite the limitations of the models at that time, the animators were still able to push the body and facial rigs to get specific poses and expressions out of them. I dare say, the first movie has some of the most expressive character animation in the franchise

Funny thing about the original Toy Story, even though the rendering obviously shows its age, and the humans and (especially) the dog don’t look great, the movie actually still holds up extremely well in terms of character acting!
