It’s that day again. A couple days earlier this year than usual.

Suzanne Ahlkvist was born March 13 1950. She has been important to so many people. Daughter, sister, mother, grand mother, great grand mother, friend, neighbour and community leader. She has been my mother for 49 years. Yesterday evening, her body finally gave up after fighting cancer a long time.

Sheffield Wednesday loose 12 points and go into administration. Sounds horrible, right? Yet a lot of fellow supporters are today celebrating. Ticket sales up, merch sales up. That’s how much the fans love the owner…

On the bus to Oslo. We just crossed the border to Norway. No wall. No checkpoint.

Person on the bus (P1) watches videos without earphones. Annoying. Racist person (P2) tells P1 to put earphones on so they won’t have to listen to Arabs in the video. More annoying. P1 responds “they’re not Arabs, they speak Hindi” and keeps watching the video without earphones. We have a winner!

Today’s class is about being a decent person in public spaces. 1. YOUR BAGS DO NOT NEED THEIR OWN SEAT ON THE BUS. 2. WHEN A MOTHER AND HER TODDLER ENTERS THE BUS YOU MOVE TO ANOTHER SEAT NEXT TO SOMEONE ELSE SO THE MOTHER AND THE CHILD CAN SIT TOGETHER.

Working with DR this weekend. Client has corruption. Transaction log backups failed a week before they saw. Can’t take tail log backup of db. Copy of datafile and attach single file shows data wasn’t written to data files for a whole week, only to transaction logs. Yay.

Arrived in Visby, Gotland yesterday. Mandatory ice cream stop in this wonderful garden with a view over Baltic Sea. This week is medieval week in Visby but I stick to my 80s outfit.

No running today. But a lot of walking. Through Stockholm, in the #pride parade. I have been there several times but this was the first year I was IN the parade. Hard to decide on section: ”We march for those who can’t”, ”Proud parents” eg. We decided to join the section with the best music.

10k today. No walking. I instead kept a strict eye on my heart rate and slowed my pace when it neared 160. In the long run, I want it at around 150 but stamina isn’t there yet. Keeping HR low makes it easier to increase training volume without risk if injury. #sqlrun #runhappy

Some news for non Schengen travellers to Sweden: From Oct 12, travellers must get their face photographed and their fingerprints taken, like ESTA and other travellers to US has for quite some time. Expect delays in your travel plans if your first point of entry to the Schengen area is Sweden.

My friends daughter has been in respiratory care. They came in to an ER in one part of the country. Then flown to the university hospital near us. Still in intensive care but out of respiratory. She has covid and a bacteria infection. Without a single payer system, she wouldn’t be with us today.

Today another 5k run. My legs hurt a little, the way they do if you sit all day and then try to run. So I kept a really slow pace and ran the whole 5k without walking. One minute slower than when I last ran a 5k with 100m walking every km. strava.app.link/oyDqmii8oVb

Enjoying another beautiful Swedish summer evening in Gagnef, Dalecarlia. Forecast for tomorrow says rain all day, but I’ll believe it when I see it. Summer so far has been superb, which really doesn’t happen every year for us. What DOES happen every year for us is five to six weeks paid vacation :)

I burnt my head in the sun. Luckily I found this very stylish hat on a flee market.

Slowly getting back into running. 20kg extra weight makes it hard but I’m trying to get out 3-4 times per week. I run 400 and walk 100, to control the heart rate and to last a little longer each time. I wish there were easy ways to do it. But I know keeping it up comes with a nice reward.

New ”haircut” and sweden-shirt on. I’m ready to knock England out of Euro 2025. (Shirt is for Swedish junior roller derby team but it does have the right colour).

I don’t know if this is typical Swedish but it’s really annoying. If I ask a visitor “would you like a cup of coffee” they often answer “did you already make some, otherwise don’t bother just for me”. Like they wouldn’t be worth the 30 second hassle of making a cup of coffee.

I optimized some SQL used in a batch a while back. Next time the batch executed, it crashed. SQL queries were now fast, meaning the batch could send WCF and REST requests faster. Which led to the server running out of ephemeral ports. Moving bottlenecks is easy. Removing bottlenecks is hard 😂

Teams message from a dev at my client: "Thank you for amazing trix to make <thing> run faster. It finishes in 6sec vs 25 seconds before ❤️" (yes, emoji was there, that's how I communicate with clients) What I did? Changed a SP parameter from int to varchar to avoid implicit conversion on data side.

I create an index to better cover a problematic part of a T-SQL query. Sql Server doesn't use the index in the execution plan. But uses the statistics from it to better estimate cardinality, moves an index seek, taking the query from 43 seconds to 1 second. "Sql Server works in mysterious ways"

I ended the year with a couple of short runs and today I got out for another shortie. The day was beautiful. Blue sky and a lot of snow. A bit too cold for longer runs today, my lungs start hurting and I can’t run with those air heater gizmos in my mouth.

I'm on the ferry to Visby, Gotland. Downloading VS2022 Preview and find myself muttering about the 3MB/sec download speed. But the fact that I'm even able to get an internet connection in the middle of the Baltic Sea is pretty amazing. I live in the future.

My son’s school had their own Nobel Prize ceremony today and he won the Mathematica prize. Time to get him into relational algebra and an internship with Transmokopter SQL AB eventually :) (Motivation is in Swedish but I’m sure ChatGPT can translate it for you if you’re curious).

They only had the demo piece left but I talked them into selling it to me.
