Just over 2 weeks ago, the Roots and Shoots Chicago Basecamp & Jane Goodall Institue hosted Dr. Jane Goodall at the Lincoln Park Zoo for free event!💛 She reminded us how important hope, persistence, & compassion are to build the future we want. She believed so strongly in the power of young people.

I feel like I write a small obituary for each bird I find. I research them and find out how far they migrate, what they eat, where they live, and share that with the public. It’s my way of honoring them and coping through the emotional loss.

Nearly four years ago, we started searching for Nellie E. Brown. It’s the name of a public school in Olongapo, Zambales in the Philippines where my friend’s dad went to school. Everyone in town had a different theory about Nellie’s identity, and Google searches led us to improbable Nellies.

Last Friday I found a bird I haven’t seen in the wild yet! This female Belted Kingfisher was downtown across from a manmade waterfall. These majestic fliers reside in Chicago all year round.

Today we found a dead Cooper’s Hawk downtown while on our bird collision monitoring walk. I am always taken aback by the beauty and complexity of each bird we find.💔

Saturday was a wild opening of the fall bird collision monitor season. After a light rain, the sun emerged over the clouds, and BOOM we had a mass of collisions on the north east corner of buildings. Over 70 dead and 20 rescues for our entire downtown team. I am mainly found Tennessee Warblers.

Did you know Illinois has 13 species of bats? 8 of those can be found in Chicago. Today I spotted a migratory visitor downtown today -the Silver-haired Bat.
