Some places are trying to address the shortage through telehealth programs and traveling SANEs who cover a large number of hospitals. But these are imperfect solutions. 5/

The SANE shortage is exacerbated by nurses’ burnout, understaffing, and inadequate pay. Trainings aren’t always easy to access and nurses often have to take time off work to attend them. 4/

Instead, nurses say, they must transfer patients who want forensic exams to other hospitals, sometimes hours away or across state lines. 3/

In Louisiana, forensic exams are supposed to be available to sexual assault survivors in every parish. But in practice, few hospitals are set up to provide them. 2/
