Elizabeth Horan, a professor of English at Arizona State University, has been cited as one of the early users of the term "Latinx" in academic literature. In the Fall 2004 volume of the journal Feministas Unidas, she used the identifier "Latinx/@" as an alternative to "Latin@" .
