The goal is not just to remove race from models. It's to build systems where race no longer adds predictive power — because the factors it proxies for have been directly measured and the inequities it captures have been addressed.

Computational approaches to removing race are often insufficient. Why? Race often correlates with (1) unmeasured but relevant factors, like genetic traits (which should be measured directly) and (2) systemic disparities, like racism (which should be addressed, not adjusted for).

I really like this thoughtful piece by @dmshanmugam.bsky.social @emmapierson.bsky.social @sidhikabalachandar.bsky.social and others on how removing race from clinical algorithms is not necessarily the anti-racist choice it is purported to be, because race often has predictive power.

Neural networks are highly non-convex, so approximate error minimizers need not look anything like each other in parameter space. But we show that nevertheless (for many model sizes) approximate error minimizers must closely agree in function/prediction space despite this!

Hey listen could FORC and FAccT maybe not be overlapping conferences every year? These are the two most relevant conferences to my research interests and I simply do not understand why they need to be on the same or nearly identical days.

How do people organize the research papers they read? My current strategy is a mess of papers in random places. I've tried organizing by topic but there's overlap and it ends up being ambiguous and too annoying to maintain.

Has anyone ever had to write a leadership statement for an academic job and if so, what did you include?
