Y’know. In the 30s German and Soviet armies crosstrained, and Stalin purged the army such that come 1940, Germany had lots of experienced career officers, and the USSR didn’t. It doesn’t exactly map to how we’re purging our military while ramping up to more war, but you get where I’m going.

Y’know I feel like posting to allay superstition, but not like threatening a bad April. So here’s some old (2023) art.

You’d expect a PNW museum to include northwest indigenous art, and you’d be right; I feel comfortable photographing basketry as non ceremonial but distinctly masterful craft. But they also have a good collection of hugely functional Nara and earlier pots.

As part of their American art they had a section of 30s/40s black and white lithography - ironically including only one Rockwell Kent print which wasn’t as strong as the Kent color paintings nearby.

Speaking of names; only one Max Ernst painting, this one, but I feel like it really evokes forests without literalism.

Two Georgia O’Keefe paintings are some of the strongest in this exhibit, but I’m especially taken with the simplicity of her color choices here, and how she builds something this cool and dramatic with a limited palette.

Tokita Kamekichi oil painting from 1932; Fay Chong watercolor of Yesler housing construction. Both painters remind me of how my grandparents painted and despite different origins and coasts, they’d be contemporaries.

Surprisingly nice place to crash out and be quiet within the museum. Makes me feel a little like a cat.

There are two types of contemporary abstract painters, 1) big but surprisingly flat blocks of color 2) impasto-rama! Pile that medium on like you’re stylin’ hair and glue found objects on as long as we’re here!

Remembering, again, the time I, Sammi, and Peggy were wandering around Santa Cruz, and went in the downtown used bookstore, a place of wonder now gone never to return. Peggy found a hardcover untranslated compilation of all Phillipe Druillet's Lone Sloane comics, but Sammi actually bought it.
