Two main goals in mind here: 1. Minimizing any chance of military or law enforcement use (also ad targeting, AI / crypto bullshit, etc.). 2. Staying under the radar of litigious asshole billionaire platform owners.

I’ve been seeing low-effort “BUY WORLDCOIN” graffiti popping up all over Berlin, and it’s not clear to me whether it’s just a tag or a fan or a joke or a mental health crisis.

Was at a summit last week where this topic came up several times (the need for safer ways to share e.g. scraper code in an environment where laws don’t matter and making someone powerful angry is a crime).

I thought there was a tiny chance this might happen at the Charlie Kirk thing yesterday, and of course it didn’t, but tweeting the Lord’s Prayer is pretty close

It’s hard to pick the funniest Charlie Kirk outrage on the Internet right now but I’m going with this man (co-founder of the Open Source Initiative and author of “Sex Tips for Geeks”) ranting about “sexual deviants and borderline mental cases”

I know that emigration isn’t an option for everyone, but it’s probably easier than you think, and these days every morning I wake up to some new reminder that it’s the best decision I’ve ever made.

I’ve been continuing this scrape, and it includes a response where Grok invents the term “pelvis spit”, which as far as I’m concerned is the only good thing any robot has done since Horse ebooks died

This is true, but every time you stop yourself from saying that Charlie Kirk was a white supremacist, that Israel is committing genocide, etc., you should take a minute to think about whether you really have to live in a fascist state and work for fascist collaborators.

I won't quote-tweet our main character of the day, but if your complaint is that Charlie Kirk's words are being taken out of context, I'd encourage you to skim through the Media Matters tag for his name. They have hundreds of posts about Kirk and most have longer clips that give the full context.

Just noticed that Charlie Kirk’s account first shows up in the Twitter Stream Grab in late 2011 with the screen name @/Kirk_2036 (he didn’t change it to @/charliekirk11 until January 2013). He wouldn’t have turned 35 until just before the 2028 election, but why not go for 2032?

I think it’s sometimes unclear what people on the left mean when we call someone a Nazi, so I propose that we start using either “Europa the Last Battle Nazi” or “Charlie Kirk Nazi” to disambiguate.

The data dumps only contain info more than 48 hours old, so there would be no real reason to hit pause on Wednesday for anything Kirk-related (I don’t expect X to be managed reasonably, though, so I guess it’s a possible explanation).

X hasn’t published a “daily” Community Notes data bundle since Wednesday. In the past these gaps have followed right-wing outrage over “controversial” notes (e.g. JK Rowling getting noted for spreading disinformation about Imane Khelif last year).

To me the most interesting thing is that there’s a whole generation of culture warriors who have a following but zero talent or expertise or charisma, and this is the first time we’re getting to see what their obituaries will look like.

Has anyone seen a list of Grok “share” URLs? Last month Forbes noted Google’s estimate of 370,000 conversations indexed, and I’ve got about a tenth that number now, but would love to have more.

Is there any good reporting on how state park systems are doing under the Trump regime? They’re the only public services I can think of where the US beats Germany, and I assume they’re going to shit like everything else over there, but I’d love to be wrong.

My new favorite genre of Grok interaction is people complaining in detail about being harassed on X and Grok going along with it and saying shit like “I’m escalating this to X moderation”. Just incredible “they got us working in shifts” energy

People somehow seem to be reading this as a “Linux is only for people who like tinkering with computers” post, and it’s exactly the opposite of that. I hate computers and I especially hate tinkering with computers.

Eagleton’s work was very important to me when I was younger, but for years I’ve avoided learning too much about what he’s been up to, because I figured I wouldn’t want to know. Here it is, I guess.

There’s a difference between reporting based on anonymous sources and shitposting exactly the same supposed fact with no evidence. Of course the latter is going to encourage “I don’t care whether it’s true” responses. That’s not good!

The most recently created X account I can find that has a DE withholding code is someone claiming to be Hassan Abdul Ghany, from November 2024. I can only find three other accounts from 2024 that are withheld in Germany, and only two are Nazis.

The thing is that German law isn’t even being enforced on X. Over the past few years I’ve put together a list of just under 20k accounts using explicitly Nazi or neo-Nazi symbols or slogans. Fewer than 10% are withheld at all, and only a small fraction of those are specifically withheld in Germany.

Ran a quick query and I have profile snapshots from this year for 33k distinct X accounts with “no DMs” in their bios. At a glance it’s more gender balanced than I would have expected, and less exclusively MAGA freaks.

Is there any good writing on the “no DMs” meme? Where did it start? Who does it? Why? Does it work? Does it affect how movements or communities develop on social media? Do these people actually not use DMs?

Pulling together some data on the current state of QAnon on X and it’s just endless rabbit holes. Current one is a 45k-follower account that claims to be an apparently real dentist from Scranton that has also been an apparently real economist from Wollongong, and before that just “PORN LOVER”.

the thing everyone is going to have to accept is that the post-trump period, whenever it comes, will not and cannot be a project of national unity, it must be a project of partisan project of renewal, in the same way that reconstruction and the new deal were partisan projects of renewal.

I’m not sure I think that whatever plans Microsoft has for GitHub now are likely to be worse than the leadership of Dohmke or Friedman or any of the other tech bros who have run it, but this is still a good thing to do.
