After a pause for Xenoblade and Star Fox, I'm back on Rebirth! Chapters 5 and 6 were a bit of a drag, but chapter 7 is reeling me back in. It's hard for me to think of a battle system I like more than this one

I've FINALLY gotten to play F-Zero AX!! Went to Galloping Ghost arcade yesterday with some friends. AX is so cool, sliding with the paddles behind the steering wheel (and the steering wheel's general shape) helps make that connection between F-Zero and F1 even more legible. Incredible cab

It's pretty safe to say that this will go down as a generational Nintendo summer for me. Xenoblade Chronicles Switch 2 Edition, Star Fox, Rhythm Heaven Groove already affirm that for me. And we still have Splatoon Raiders and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Switch 2 Edition coming! Incredible

Rhythm Heaven Groove is immediately joyful, not that I had any doubt it would be. This is my favorite type of game: simple, immediately understandable, fun for everyone. Can't wait to play 4P multiplayer with my friends visiting for the 4th!

Love the Mario Kart World update with the added Knockout Tour routes and stickers in Photo Mode. This patch finds new fun in the pre-existing game in a way that really demonstrates how rugged the core of MKW is. I don't need new track DLC, just more ways to interact with what's already here

I know everyone's posts and op-eds and podcasts come from a good place so this is not an attack, but there's value in working to disentangle ourselves and our work from The Industry Narrative. Like the Xbox stuff: this is just malicious corporate bookkeeping. I don't know how to usefully lament that

Splatoon Raiders looks awesome. Love how deeply customizable and granular it all is. Something nice about that level of personalization in the context of a game as messy and chaotic (but legible!) as this. The art design continues to be s-tier also. Love those different tiers of Salmonids

Xenoblade taught me that there are just big enemies in the overworld that are a billion levels higher and WILL wreck me, but won't bother me if I don't bother them. I just observe them from a distance and move on. This is how I move in regards to the stuff many of you engage with here on bsky

The trouble with fandom culture is that the closer I get to the center of any of it, the more annoying the average person becomes. I have to maintain my well-above-normal interest in a number of artists/videogames/films while also maintaining my distance from the people who Know Too Much

Star Fox uses filmic language to great effect, one of its strongest moves (that is going underappreciated!) is its aspect ratio change from a letterboxed image in cinematics to full-screen gameplay. Keeps the experience seamless & invokes that feeling of entering a bespoke shot-for-IMAX action scene

I feel like Star Fox 2026 has very different priorities from 64. After you beat your first run it becomes clear that this game is very interested in progression and completion. It wants you to see, do, and collect everything. One run is just that, whereas one run can feel like all there is in 64

First run report card! I already find Star Fox to be outstanding and have a hard time "seeing through it" to 64 underneath. One moment I loved: in the cinematic before Macbeth, Peppy offered some narrative context for the alternate route into Area 6 that made that path both legible and encouraged!!

On chapter 12 of Xenoblade now and I can't put the game down. I'm being guided by my understanding of the characters and the story's carefully seeded questions from beautiful new location (accompanied by amazing music) to plot revelation and back again in a great loop. Clarity and momentum!!

The editor in me fully agrees with Wesley (the editor in me also looks beyond "sucks" to understand what he's saying here, that we all improve when we're in honest dialogue)!
