It ranks just behind One Love and way behind Bohemian Rhapsody. But two of the top 7 were directed by James Mangold. Not bad.

The Shrouds is now watchable at home. It plays better than it did in theaters. Definitely not for everyone—but it works for me and it’s gotten better with every viewing. He’s onto something, just as he was with Crimes of the Future. Prophetic, mournful, bizarre, exquisitely macabre. Funny too.

Just took a NYT quiz matching film reviews with review headlines and film posters. It shouldn’t have been hard, since some of the reviews are mine. But this is the Times’ verdict: “Not bad. You may yet become a cinephile.” Ok, I’ll try.

Please don’t be ghoulish about whatever happened to Gene Hackman, his wife and their dog. He earned his right to privacy and gave us more than we had any right to expect. Celebrate his career and leave it at that.
