Anyway, the struggle today was writing jumping & falling (with Coyote time), forced movement/displacement, and impact damage on collisions.

Alternatively, using a narrative currency could work. “I spend this token the move this damage to me” sort of effect which then gives the GM a token to use as they please. Good if you don’t mind more of a game-y feel, but can be a parasitic system that’s separate from the whole.

In the event that you haven't already considered this: What if it was a base reaction that everyone can do by making a check (eg. basic agility/reflex?), but a player can choose to specialize into using that action by taking a feat that would allow them to remove the check?

I've hit a hurdle in hobby writing this TTRPG system. I am considering whether I should have the ability to intercept attacks targeted at nearby allies as a base ability everyone has. Or if it should take investment, like taking a feat or spending points. Or if it should not exist at all. 🤔

Humu Gotta say, I don't much like Hero Units in RTS, but I do like Top Bar global powers.

I finished this token tonight on stream and I think it looks OK I don't know her name yet but she's an angel with a shotgun (and 7 other guns)

Oh man, I found an old blog with game design thoughts from Riot designers. Always enjoyed the amount of transparency they had and still do as designers. Glad some of the old forum posts were preserved.

Theory: Zileas’ List of Game Design Anti-Fun Patterns
One thing I greatly respect about Riot Games, makers of League of Legends, is that they design according to rules. I don’t think they structure their analysis quite like I am on this blog, bu…

I think the Naruto ninja world would make a nice power baseline for a tabletop game. Everyone can walk on water, run on walls, and jump real high by default!

I like some of the difficulty settings in games that increase opportunities along with risks Slay the Spire: more elites (more relics) Decktamer: more mutations (to tame) Into the Breach: you get more enemies & alphas (enemies hit each other) & also ItB also doubles your healing at max diffy

A17 Watcher now. And it took like one try after coming back from Decktamer. It was unfortunately not a heartbreaker run, tho.

Woah Well I beat all Decktamer bosses and did the final one on the hardest diffy. It'll be spoilers to say too much. But it's a very cool game with amazingly flavorful and exciting abilities. The ludonarrative consconance is deliciously palpable.

I'm torn between making a primary action resource max out to 3/3 or 10/10 3 is such a nice small number while 10 gives way more granularity...

Curious relic in a meta sense. Once you know about it, there's always hope when entering shops with a bit of gold, no matter how low your HP is. Makes you less likely to abandon runs.

I quite enjoy writing for PF2e. The 3-action system, heightening system, and focus point systems give a lot of flexibility and aren't class locked. And the trait system can be used to compress homebrew mechanics. It's just very comfy to write for, despite the amount of content it already has.

I kinda like the cards that say "End Your Turn" on Watcher. They can't stack or be recasted, so they can be pretty strong.

Randomly gave it a spin. Good deck, but died to heart. Still, it was really a misplay on the Spear and Shield that did me in.

Junking really is a mechanic that's significantly easier in digital games, too much of a bother in analog ones. Despite being a concept that requires having a deck of cards.

There's some interesting asymmetry in Slay the Spire where you can poison enemies, but they never poison you. And enemies can burn you but you can't junk them.

Advantages of each TTRPG setting: Fantasy: Don't have to worry about tech like computers, guns, and phones. Sci-fi: Tech like teleporters, shields, and ESP is basically magic. Modern: I can put pop music in my GMing playlist.

Starcraft II Archipelago has been fun. Particular highlights for me are getting Infestors early on to neural parasite a bunch of Quillgors Having to do The Dig without Seige Tanks and Bunkers Having access to Time Stop, Solar Bombardment, and Purifier Beam all at the same time

One of my favourite rewards/motivators in video games is cosmetics. But it's hard to supply/justify it as a reward in TTRPGs.

Come to think of it, people just make up board games right? Like that's a thing you do and instead of publishing it you just play it with your friends?? Surely that's a thing. Maybe I should make up a board game.

Also found out during my testing that, unintuitively, you can put zealots behind stalkers in no-micro mirror fights. It's just more important to get the initial volley of shots before your opponent and have the high HP stalkers tank. Maybe Direct Strike players know this better...

Draw Steel is out. Core rules are like $90 (CAD) for me :combust: I wonder how much of the content will be made available online free, if ever.

Slow game speed attempt The opening volleys are most important. That's when the shots are most synchronized. And if you fumble even one blink dodge at the beginning the knock-on effects the rest of the fight are huge.

I tried doing this myself, 10 stalkers vs 12 I was able to get it a few times on the SLOWEST game speed. It put into perspective how insurmountable a 20% diff in numbers is.
