Wonder Man really turning into something great. That B&W episode. Wonderful. And the chemistry between Yahya and Kingsley is exceptional, particularly in the madcap ep 6.

Wasteman tackles modern prison life with a raw immediacy, utilising a lot of phone recordings to give a sense of how everything that happens behind bars is part of a social media culture. A marvellous duo of performances from Jonsson and Blyth.

Next up was Send Help. Sam Raimi dabbles in some of his usual gonzo visual work with some nice gooey moments. But largely it’s a psychological two hander with McAdams and O’Brien bouncing nicely off one another. The film constantly shifting allegiances and giving substance to their natures.

Next up was Hamnet which just about broke me. So many tears throughout. One moment was so unbearable I genuinely almost had to leave. Just a beautiful film about love and grief. How we use art to heal but also to allow people to live on. Jessie Buckley is astonishing.

Cinema day today. Is This Thing On surprised me with how raw it was about marriage. Sure there are jokes but it’s not the comedy/drama balance you’d expect. It’s more subdued and reflective. Will Arnett gives a proper brilliant performance.

On the flip side as much as I am on the fence about legacy sequels, the idea of a Mummy 4 with Fraser and Weisz returning sounds delicious. The first 2 are just barrels of fun and I’d argue one of the only things to come close to tapping into Indiana Jones territory.

I do love Mike Flanagan’s work but I have many questions as to why he’s doing a new version of The Mist. Frank Darabont’s one (especially in B&W) is phenomenal with an ending that is up there with some of the greatest and ballsiest. Not sure what more there is to offer.

Genuinely been impressed with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The right balance of heart and humour. Tight character work. Efficient plotting (30 mins per episode). Yet the stakes still feel high to keep you emotionally invested.

I really hope they do more of The Muppet Show after that revival show. Clearly made by those who love the original. A few clunky moments but overall it’s just proper joy. Fun musical numbers and some clever jokes complete the package.

If I Had Legs I’d Kick You is like the Uncut Gems of motherhood. Like a constantly increasing panic attack, its extreme close ups build such an intensity that you completely experience the same sense of suffocation Rose Byrne’s character does. She’s phenomenal in a raw performance.

Cracking second season of The Night Manager, ending in a real Empire Strikes Back style gut punch. Just high quality wonderfully acted stuff. S3 going to be a long wait.

Blown away by The Odyssey prologue. 6 mins of pure intense build up backed by Ludwig Goransson’s foreboding score and Nolan’s incredible sense of scale. It feels epic in design. Sure it’s got his usual penchant for LOUD sound work but I’m all in on this one.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is Cameron going all in on the spectacle. Just lavishly beautiful to watch and action packs a punch. It doesn’t quite justify its lengthy runtime though. It has good pace but a lot of the story treads in the midsection.

It’s taken some time but about to check out Avatar Fire and Ash in IMAX. Mainly excited for The Odyssey prologue though.

One thing I loved about The Bone Temple, one of many things, is how the opening scene marries up stylistically with Boyle’s preceding film. Kinetic editing, intense close ups etc. Before DaCosta then transitions into a more traditional style. Clever way of bridging the two pieces.

Look I love these stories, especially that central character, and we’ve had some brilliant adaptations but do we really need another?!

Train Dreams is a quiet masterpiece. One of those films that seems simple in plot but contains rivers of meaning. This one tackles the notion of life itself. Those we leave behind, our legacy and our purpose. All told through the subtlest of performances by Joel Edgerton.

It is heartbreaking to see what happened in Minneapolis and a sign that ICE have gone fully Gestapo. But I do think there is inherent racism in the fact that there seems more outrage now about ICE after a white woman is murdered than in all the horrific kidnappings and treatment of minorities

A House of Dynamite is a powder keg of intensity. Visceral and immediate. It’s 3 act structure could’ve been frustrating but it’s key in building that sense of urgency and how different departments work with one another in terms of crisis. A divisive ending for sure but an impactful one.

I didn’t get to see many films this year, what you get when you have a baby I guess, but here are my top 20 from what I did see.

This is spot on. Maduro was by every account a monstrous individual who destroyed his country and killed many. But swooping in to kidnap him without any sort of congressional approval or examination of legality sets a terrifying precedent. When an administration is above the law then where next.

Marty Supreme is a staggering epic about the true cost of going after your dream no matter what. It’s energetic, unpredictable, hilarious, pretty tragic at times and a true American story. Chalamet gives the performance of his life. A narcissist of the highest order but thanks to flashes of

Pretty content with that Stranger Things finale. It’s played safe for sure and the Vecna stuff ends rather standard. But the extended epilogue carries a real emotional weight. An ode to friendship and aging. It’s been a long sometimes messy road but will miss this crew.

Up to date on Stranger Things. Still pretty strong. Perhaps a little too many find this or hunt that quests. But the character stuff here is solid, leading to some genuinely heartbreaking moments. Will’s big moment and the Dustin/Steve especially good.

Brigitte Bardot, 1934-2025

Pluribus S1 ends on a real high note. A genuinely thought provoking show shot through with that Vince Gilligan sense of pace and detail. Nothing out there like it and a proper showcase for the majesty that is Rhea Seahorn.

A lot of odd decisions leading to that Avengers Doomsday teaser. No need for Evans to be brought back. As much as I love the character and the film may factor him in well. But at the moment it reeks of desperation. Trying to claw back fans the MCU has lost over this year.

Finished that first chunk of Stranger Things S5 episodes. Really solid. Large scale action, nice character moments in between and some nice new add ons to the lore. Found Will to be the weak link though. Given more to do at last. But it’s a flimsy unconvincing performance.

IT: Welcome to Derry was largely a success. Some of the kid performances were a little screechy, the reliance on weak CGI did it no favours and some of the character motivations were thinly sketched. But it developed the universe out effectively, a few characters you genuinely cared about

Check out Wake up Dead Man on Netflix now. Another fantastic murder mystery impeccably made by Rian Johnson. Also features one of my fave scenes this year. One that starts out comedic but pivots into something heartbreaking all played by 2 brilliant performers using delicate tonal subtlety.

Supergirl does look like fun and Milly Allcock seems to be nailing the role. It does, however, feel very very Guardians of the Galaxy lite. Even to the point of looking like the same sets.
