Lebanese Arabic word that I hear often at least in the South: زهايمر zahaymar/zhaymar or -ir (Alzheimer's) e.g. شو صايبك زهيمر لعم تنسى هالقد؟ šu ṣāybak zahaymir ta-ʕam tinsa hal-ʔad? (Are you getting Alzheimer's forgetting this much?) Dropping the 'Al' as if it were a definite article

A few years ago, I translated some of Aesop’s Fables into Lebanese Arabic 🇱🇧 Sometimes I translated a version as-is; other times, I built a new version from the various translations on fablesofaesop.com. It was fun! There were 5 or 6 in total that I’ll be sharing here. 1- The Old Man and Death:

Lebanese Arabic verb of the day: رَمْضَن ramḍan to pass Ramadan somewhere or with someone eg رح رمضن لحالي السنة raħ ramḍən la-ħālə s-sinə I'll spend Ramadan alone this year Does it exist in other dialetcs?

I'd bet there are at least two or three dozen Egyptians named Ramadan Karim or Karim Ramadan, and likely quite a few named Mubarak Ramadan or Ramadan Mubarak😆 RamaDaan Mbaarak!

Shakespeare in Lebanese Arabic 😀 What do you think? I like to use the rare demonstrative هك or هاك; I feel like it's fancier than هـ or هيدي I also felt the almost archaic ضيّ fits the register more than the more common ضوّ Also بيضوي instead of بيضوّي

Another Lebanese Arabic loanword: بَنّد، تْبَنَّد bannad, tbannad to ban, to get banned e.g.: bannadūni 3a Facebook tbannad ḥsēbi 3a Insta What’s cool about it is that it’s borrowed from the past tense form of the English verb "to ban" in order to get the productive trilateral root b n d!

I can't see how this meaning could've developed from the Arabic root to be honest. In Italian, they say "andare in tilt" to express a similar meaning.. So I guess this word might come from the TILT error mechanism in pinball machines! When triggered, the whole machine stops working! Wild if true!

Lebanese Arabic equivalent: تَلَّت، بيتَلِّت، مْتَلِّت أو مْتَلَّت tallat, bitallit, mtallit/mtallat e.g.: l computer ʕam bitallit raasi mtallit l yowm (I'm lagging; I can't think straight today)
