I got to see Jesus Travieso in August. Electric arm and I'm not surprised the Pirates were interested. That said, was probably his best start of the year, and there's a lot of reliever risk given body and control.

The attrition just caught up to the Red Sox. Losing Casas, Anthony, Mayer, Houck, Crawford, Dobbins, Fitts, Criswell, Hendriks to injury, Buehler ineffective, Campbell giving nothing after April, and the Devers debacle, it's kind of impressive they even made the playoffs.

One man's guess at the wild card roster. SPs aren't in any particular order. Early is off but comes back if they advance. Don't need a 4th starter in a 3-game series.

Unless Bernardino is ready or if they would prefer another RHP with Harrison (or Early) sliding to the bullpen.

Nice little "thank you for your service" to De Leon, who'll immediately be DFA after the season I presume. For those curious, 40-man was at 39. Murphy will be down for 15 days barring injuries, so he's not an option until WS.

Red Sox magic number is now 1. It sets up a potentially awkward situation. Lucas Giolito is 5 IP away from 150, which would trigger a $250k incentive. He'd pitch game 162 on regular rest, but all involved surely would prefer he sit. Will the team consider just paying the $250k?

Senior VP Paul Toboni leaving to lead Nationals baseball ops per Jeff Passan, latest stop in a meteoric rise. Joined the org as an intern in '15, rising to amateur scouting dir., then VP of amateur scouting & player dev before becoming one of Breslow's top lieutenants. Big loss for the Red Sox FO.

A few folks have made the point that swapping Crochet and Bello lines Crochet up for a potential game 1. Of course, that's the primary reason. But I wonder if they would consider using Crochet on short rest in a do-or-die game 162. Not for 100 pitches, but 3/4 IP or something.

Red Sox are now tied with Houston, over whom they have the tiebreaker, for the 2nd WC. 2 games back of the Yankees, 1.5 games up on Cleveland. If the Red Sox go 4-4 the rest of the way, Cleveland needs to go 7-2 to pass them. Each win now is huge.

Looking at the AAA roster, if the Red Sox think they need an arm... You'd think there's a chance it's David Sandlin. The problem is he's really struggled in the bullpen. 16.1-25-17-15-11-14 in 12 relief appearances since 8/5, giving up runs in 8 of them.

Seems there's a decent chance Payton Tolle makes his MLB relief debut tomorrow. Enough guys might be unavailable you'd think they might make a move for someone, but all those guys have pitched too... Need the offense to make it a laugher and/or for Bello to go deep.

Heck of a debut from Early. Had everything working. Before they announced Tolle would start tomorrow, I'd wondered if Early would go right back down for Harrison. But he's earned another turn next Tuesday at Fenway against these same A's.

3 punchies, slider (Curve?), fastball, fastball, to make up the 2nd? I'll take that. Nice start for Early.

Lot of hand-wringing over the pitching vs. NYY Sept. 12-14 b/c what I posted had Tolle, May, Giolito. Who cares? The goals are: win the most games, be ready for playoffs. You already have the tiebreaker over NYY too. They may tweak the rotation, but it shouldn't be b/c of NYY.

Per a team source, they expect Criswell back by the end of the year, but not the next couple weeks.

One way they could use the last pitcher spot: 9/1-2: Kelly 9/3-10: Harrison up, makes 2 starts to keep Tolle on min. 5 days rest 9/11-EOS: Harrison down for another reliever. With their off days, they only need spot starts on 9/3 and 9/10 to give Tolle sufficient rest.

Don't look at this as who's up for the entire month. Harrison, for example, seems likely to make a start in this upcoming series, so Kelly might go right back down.

Kyle Harrison was originally set to start today. Now Chris Murphy is starting. With the report the Red Sox want to keep Tolle on at least 5 days' rest, they would need 1 spot start each of the next 2 weeks. This might mean Harrison gets a start against Cleveland.

Things changed in a matter of like 2 weeks when he continued to dominate AAA and proved that he was the best option ahead of Harrison or Uberstine. Criswell and then Fitts getting hurt also a huge factor.
