At the risk of being obvious, American Pie is one of the handful of songs that I knew, the minute I first heard it, would be a huge number one classic.

Here I am in 71 stirring up a huge batch of sangria for a party at that "Our House" house I mentioned before. Chukka boots, wire rims, flared jeans, work shirt, check! How we all were such good students, I can't fathom.

I read that this year at the E. Fitzgerald memorial, they added a 30th chime in honor of Lightfoot's passing.

Today's early broadcast clocked in at 2 hours 53 minutes. They had started playing the number ones from the whole decade, and at least one "extra" and LDD.

Casey sings! Sort of. Right before number 34 (10/26/74).

There used to be a radio PSA by the Illinois Sec of State encouraging organ donations. He used the Someone saved, someone saved...refrain on it and I thought it was very effective.

Pets inspire us every day. They make us better people and light our life when it all is dark. They are our soulmates, in every sense of the word.

No LDDs, flashbacks, listener questions, or other extraneous stuff this week. Wonder if they were edited out or if the original show didn't have them.

I remember seeing news coverage of Pope John Paul II when he was touring somewhere, and the crowd of tens of thousands was singing Rivers of Babylon as he was being driven in. It was amazing and somewhat moving.

In Baker Street, I believe the line, "when you thought it held everything" is an allusion to this Samuel Johnson quote: "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life, for there is in London all that life can afford."

I recall hearing, at the time, that Carradine wrote this song to be as bad as he could make it, to make fun of ... something or somebody. Do any of our music insiders know anything about this?

. This van Gogh story has been debunked by an art historian doing primary research. He did not give it to a prostitute. You can google a short article, "What actually happened to Vincent van Gogh's ear?...." on the Berkeley library website. Also, Casey reads lyrics, so two Bingo squares!

Oh boy, in 74 I was preparing for a multi-week stay in Appenzell, Switzerland. Heard some of these songs on Armed Forces Radio out of Munich. Great days! This is on Mt. Ebenalp, I think.

The firing of the Librarian of Congress is worse than many appreciate. The Librarian is appointed for a ten year term by the president with the advice and consent of the Senate. The position is nonpartisan and runs the critically important Congressional Research Service.

I watched much of the early broadcast this morning. It clocks in at just a tad over 2 hrs. As usual, it has some greats and some awfuls. Those with "Casey speaking reverently" on their bingo card are in luck.
