Much of American Evangelicalism in one photograph. Dragging a polished cross on training wheels through a celebration of white supremacy while ignoring & whitewashing the clear words and witness of departed racists and calling it all a faithful presentation of the gospel.

Jesus’s Gospel revival looks like: • good news to the poor • freedom for prisoners • recovery of sight for the blind • setting the oppressed free • proclaiming the year of the Lord’s favour (jubilee: an economic, cultural, environmental, & communal reset)

Nothing Christ-like about any of Kirk’s views. The fruit of his life was the opposite of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness; & self-control. So it’s no wonder he’s venerated as an American saint.

National anthems are the idolatrous hymns of choice for the Empire church. And the Empire church is the opposite direction of following Jesus.

Tragedy doesn’t change the reality of what was. It’s lamentable. But it’s not a case for the beatification of evil.

Apparently arguing in favor of one’s own hatred, racism, misogyny, bigotry, and violence against those who disagree is now called “doing politics right.” But I guess those views have always gotten white men statues in the USA.

Guns beaten into plowshares. The tools of violence reforged into tools of cultivation & new life. Will we make it so in our time?
