I was very excited to discover sour plums at my local Middle Eastern supermarket, as I didn’t know you could get them outside Japan. So, I impulsively bought everything necessary to make umeshu (or Japanese plum wine). These should be ready for drinking in a year’s time. Kampai!

Christmas dinner leftovers, pt. 2: roast beef sandwiches.

The best thing about Christmas dinner is that it gives you leftovers ready to be dipped in soy sauce and vinegar.

This year, I decided to indulge my British husband by giving him roast beef and stilton for Christmas Eve dinner.

Every year at Christmas, I am reminded of why I never bother to peel potatoes otherwise.

I went to what I thought was a conveyor belt sushi restaurant. However, when I sat down, I realised that the sushi was not being delivered by a conveyor belt, but by a CHRISTMAS TRAIN!

I adore the medieval beauty of quince, so I spent the day cooking as a displacement activity: quince poached in a spiced syrup, pickled quince, quince mincemeat, and quince turned into mostarda di Venezia.

Turns out Portuguese weddings are a blast, especially when your husband is as handsome as mine!

I was so excited to find these courgette flowers in a Roman supermarket yesterday that I didn’t think twice about carefully bringing them home in my hand luggage (ignoring my husband’s mumbling about my apparent insanity). They’ll be stuffed with mozzarella and fried for dinner.
