‘I love you’, she murmured, already drifting back to sleep. When he turned around to answer, she was already gone. Liam lingered in the doorway, watching her sleep. He felt lucky. So lucky it didn’t even occur to him to be afraid.

His compliment came out clumsy. Penny smiled anyway. The fact that he confirmed her belly was huge ended the moment. He could go to work, she would miss him less. A kiss on her forehead, and he got up.

She asked him to stay a minute longer. He couldn't deny her anything, so he slipped back into bed beside her and, as he moved closer to her face, reminded himself (not for the first time) how beautiful she was. Penny didn’t feel that way...

The morning came way too soon. Liam did his best not to wake Penny when he got out of bed, but she opened her eyes before he even set a foot on the floor. She had almost forgotten that he would now have to get up every day to run the business.

All of it : the work, the money, the sacrifices, had been worth it. Much later, they turned off the lights for the first time. Counted the till. Cleaned up. Liam was already thinking about the next day.

After her toast, a sharp sensation crossed her abdomen. She froze for a second. Liam noticed immediately. He thanked her quietly for staying so long and guided her to a chair. She didn’t need to be asked twice.

She was proud of him. Truly. Seeing so many people come together for him warmed something in her chest. Liam had a very special way of charming everyone. Every person who ever crossed his path felt affection for him.

By nightfall, the glasses had already been emptied and refilled several times. The place was alive, just as he had imagined it. Penny had found the strength to be there. She smiled, spoke, raised a glass , playing her part perfectly.

Liam was ecstatic! His dream was finally coming true. He had worked hard to bring this project to life, and he was determined to make this first night a memorable event.

Finally, the time had come. The bar was opening its doors for the first time. Residents of Nordhaven and even nearby towns (certainly invited by Giuseppina) had gathered to attend the inauguration. Music filled the room. The fireplace crackled. Glasses clinked. Laughter followed.

He stood there, helpless. He was usually able to find something to say. Not always the right thing, but something. This time, he stayed silent, afraid of saying the wrong words. So he did the only thing he could. He pulled her into his arms and let her bury her face against his shoulder.

Outside, in front of people, she effortlessly put on a smile, she was the perfect mum-to-be. But whenever she found herself alone at home, she felt differently. Questions constantly cluttered her mind. This time, for the first time, she let Liam see it. Unable to hide it.

She tried to say something, but the sounds stuck in her throat. Without the steady beeping of monitors, the presence of doctors and nurses, the house felt deadly quiet. The return home wasn't comforting, instead it was like a return to reality, and it was quite brutal.

Liam noticed the silence and assumed she was like him, lost in thoughts of the future. He realized he was wrong the moment they stepped inside. Penny’s gaze remained unfocused, drifting somewhere he couldn’t reach. When he offered to make tea, she didn’t answer. Her lower lip trembled instead.

The drive home had been silent. Liam, barely focused on the road and lost in his thoughts, picturing more than ever what their life would soon be like. Penny, not really knowing what to say after that moment. Or even exactly how to feel.

Then he stood behind her, one hand resting gently there, as if trying to connect with what he had just discovered. Penny looked up at him. At the quiet happiness on his face. She smiled, then lowered her gaze to her belly. Whoever you are, she thought, you’re already changing everything.

Penny remained dazed. As soon as she stood up, Liam stepped closer and kissed her cheek. She let him, still processing what she had just seen. He wrapped his arms around her, careful not to press against her rounded belly.

It felt strange to Penny. She was used to feeling movements inside her body. But seeing them, the shape, the small gestures, the reality of it stirred something new inside her. Not good. Not bad. Just… unfamiliar. They had decided not to learn the baby’s gender yet.

When the doctor pointed at the screen and announced that everything was fine, Penny felt her muscles finally relax. Liam’s did the opposite. The tiny flicker appeared on the screen : the baby’s heart. He jumped up immediately, getting closer to get a better look. The baby moved.

The couple had found out about the pregnancy late. As a result, all the medical tests had been delayed, and that day’s ultrasound felt particularly important. Penny seemed calm. Almost detached. Liam, on the other hand, could barely sit still.

By the fire, in the arms of a man she loved, in a house that felt more like home every day, with a faithful companion asleep on the rug… As her therapist had said, happiness can be hard to find in little things when you’re down. It still took effort, but at that moment, Penny felt that happiness.

He knew Penny would bring up the topic again as soon as she caught her breath, so he told her what she wanted to hear. She needed to hear that he would try to come. Even if it was “soon”. She accepted his answer and let her head fall on his shoulder. After all, at that moment, she felt good.

Liam didn't mention it, it was hard enough for Penny already, but he had little time for himself. He was constantly working, or taking care of the house to make things easier. So when Penny asked him to come to a therapy session with her, he tried to distract her with a little moment of complicity.

The moments together were precious. She could no longer move around much, and he came home drained from his days renovating the building, so outings, strolls and sports were no longer part of their lives. Instead, they found comfort in the affection they gave each other. And deep conversations...

Everytime she came back from these therapy sessions, she felt like no matter how hard she tried, she would never be able to enjoy becoming a mother soon. Would that make her the worst mother on earth? Thankfully, she felt that Liam listened to her. He didn't always understand her, but he listened.

Penny was ambitious, dedicated to her work, and her career and personal life had always come before her desire to have children. Now that she had to give up on one, and little by little, on the other... She wasn't doing well. She had started therapy a few weeks earlier, but she hated it.

Liam listened to his girlfriend's complaints and paid attention to them. He listened without ever complaining in return. Without a second source of income, it had become urgent for him to open his business and earn money. They would soon be parents and penniless otherwise.

The day hadn't really started yet and Penny was already exhausted. Since she had lost her job, she felt like getting out of bed was the first challenge of the day, with no real purpose. The other small challenges of the day? They seemed unbeatable.

Mornings were quiet in Nordhaven. The town's charm came from its local businesses, its community activities, and the shared hobbies of its residents. Around this time, the town was still asleep, but in one of the houses in the neighbourhood, the sound of voices could be heard from outside...

I've been in a sad mood regarding my save (I don't call it a story because it's not even what it is) lately. I want to share it. I have ideas and gameplay that I find interesting, but in the end, I feel like it's not high enough quality... It's kind of affecting my mood and presence here. (1/...?)

If you are a storyteller and are committed to your story, especially its aesthetic, I'm sure you use a reshade and carefully shoot your pictures. But do you edit them even more afterwards? How? How much? I feel like my shots are quite boring, and I'd like to make them more interesting. 🤷🏼
