I've ridden a lot of light rail, and the L1 is the coolest with its canyons and tunnels, but it has 2 problems. One is that it stops at all stops even if nobody gets on or off. The other is the single-track terminus, where any time saved by skipping stops is lost by waiting for the track to open up.

Here's my alternate history "CityRail Metro: What Sydney Should Have Built", because my hot take is the Metro we're getting was the wrong way to do it. This is a deinterlined rail network - in a normal weekday each line would have its own set of tracks, but like NYC could be sent anywhere if needed.

I hear you're meant to do that, otherwise you'd be sending a busy line's ten-car trains to a smaller line that doesn't deserve that much. The NJT NEC goes to two LIRR lines because it's that busy.

To commemorate the 100th year of Sydney electric trains, I chased the 100-year-old train up and down the Illawarra Line all day. For added challenge, I shot all my video with manually-adjusted focus and exposure. The best picture I got was posing the Red Rattler next to the modern Metro at Sydenham.

I have a hot take about the Sydney Metro West they're building to Parramatta, as well as the Metro Western Sydney Airport to St Mary's: they are kind of silly projects. AC electrification is planned, so we could connect the two metros, and repurpose the entire line to be part of the high speed rail.

Here is my flag redesign of New South Wales. The color stripes come from the 1980s-era paint scheme of the state rail authority, and it also has the Sydney Opera House, which is the only building in Australia.
