My engineering team is short staffed so I’ve been booked to manage live tv broadcasts every day this week. It’s a fun amount of chaos but also exhausting. I am in need of peaceful cuddles from a loved one. Hopefully soon.

Liquid Glass sometimes renders in HDR! It seems to only do this if the screen is already in EDR mode (such as while viewing a Gain Map photo). On the Home Screen this would not be the case, and Liquid Glass remains SDR.

Apple Log 2 will finally be using a gamut much closer to sensor native, including non-human virtual colors. Excellent news. Funny how closely it resembles the test results I saw of an iPhone 12’s gamut when Macbeth patches were matched to a human observer. Data: horizon-lab.org/colorvis/cam...

Finally got the LUT boxes I'm using to behave after solving some tedious full/partial scaling issues. One step closer to HDR streaming in my home studio. It's all tested, just gotta clean up some stuff on the distribution side to make it roll out smoothly :D

There will be an "Apple Log 2" encoding apparently. No documentation available yet, but I'll guess that the original encoding went into floating point range too easily. I'd have to confirm with test footage tho.

Successful 4K HDR upgrade in a tv studio with SMPTE fiber, got some cables to clean up around the Mo-Sys, but it all works :D

Heck yeah my sketchy-ass method of streaming HDR with FLAC audio using multiple ffmpeg instances pulling HLS over a WireGuard tunnel… works :D Since it involves multiple counters, I was worried it had a race condition, but it seems pretty robust to clock drift and connection timeouts.

Anamorphic lenses always seem like a great idea until I remember I have a hard time finding anything I want to depict in that way. The shooting experience is tough. Some of the new autofocus ones seem interesting though. 👀

I’m still quite proud of this video, I do want to make more, but it’s graceful steps to make sure things are depicted with the right language & care to convey my beliefs about causal nudity, sex and love. It mustn’t be teasing, condescending, or put on a pedestal, but gentle, canid & approachable.

“Dolby Vision 2” was just announced. Mostly marketing hype atm. Having produced DV content myself, I’m guessing it’s just better integration of Dolby IQ (ambient light compensation), and better guarantees the hardware supports all the metadata. Curious of any changes to content mastering side.

Finally played with Darktable again, quite impressed with their modern pipeline, and how flexibly the modules adapt with scene-referred data. The UI is still open source levels of clunky, on top of not being able to view HDR in the UI yet, but I'm having fun with it.

Hearing various podcasts & interviews about the production of Mythbusters is cathartic for me, having also spent 10 years on a show that had whacky fun but also behind the scenes pains. They lived the peak of reality TV chaos, yet turned out as kind & level headed people, which is quite inspiring.

I think part of the reason I struggle to have a normal social life is because the things I consider fun are what most people would consider work related. The normal offers I do get for socializing I turn down (or leave) because they don’t feel engaging to me, or I don’t feel I fit in.

Been a while since I’d checked in with SVT-AV1 benchmarks and damn, it’s outperforming x265 in some respects these days.

It's still funny to me that the only way to live stream FLAC audio (even just to the origin) is Icecast, and HLS/CMAF with fMP4. While SRT, MoQ, and even E-RTMP all theoretically support it, there's no tooling to handle it at the container level. Most live streaming tools are still MPEG-TS based.

Pushing this little LUT box to its limit, attempting to convert SLog3 to PQ in real time for live streaming in HDR. It's a struggle, but I think I'll have it dialed in soon.

the beatport preview player sounds like the equivalent of opening a mp3 file in mspaint, scaling whatever garbled pixel data it appears as down 25% (which uses a nearest-neighbor algorithm), and then re-saving the resulting jpg as an mp3 again

Putting together a little demo for my colleagues of some modern post production video workflow stuff, including some cloud things (ie. FrameIO). It may not all be relevant for their broadcast tv needs, but given the insane amount they pay Avid already, it’s always worth seeing what’s out there. :)

my housemate and i have a running gag about how terrible "proof of delivery" photos often are (due both to cheap hardware and many delivery companies mistreating & rushing employees) so now we'll be like "hey btw i put your laundry in your room" and then attempt to take the shittiest photo possible
