Suppose there are fewer entry level coder jobs because these are done by AI, but we still need more advanced engineers. In this world “pedagogical programming” : writing software designed primarily to *teach humans* becomes Huge. This is not yet a model training objective.

Is there a name for the phenomenon whereby management communities are unable to hear scientific advice which is inconvenient? Eg goodheart’s law to someone who invents a poorly designed new metric …missing not at random to a person who wants to use survey data with low response to make a decision.

There might be some weird biomodal effects from genAI on how deep education needs to go. Being moderately educated might be less valuable, but genuine deep expertise might be more valuable. What if it’s either stop at GCSE or carry on to PhD, with little benefit in the middle? Just thinking etc…

It is possible for these things to be simultaneously true: 1. The things GenAI can and will do well are a small subset of human potential, and improvements will saturate 2. The things it does well overlap with much of the current human labour tasks in the middle classes in the developed world

Not having to do the same information work twice is a powerful aspect of information as a reproducible good. Our improved ability to discover what has already been done and not have to do it again is a beautiful liberator. We just have to get used to the new economics carefully and kindly.

You know those moments when you’re trying to prompt the LLM to write some prose or code and it sucks, and it’s frustrating and it turns out faster to do it yourself? That’s the signal you’re doing real new intellectual work, not sampling in “already done by someone but you haven’t met them” space.

Our worry about AI in labour economics is really the discovery of how much of the knowledge economy was duplicative waste. We’ve been wasting minds and lives on duplicative information busywork.
