Playing HL1 in TLG is a rather offbeat experience. Most NPCs are missing or broken and it crashes occasionally, but gosh doesn't the game look great in black and white?

As the years go by and I see more and more failed attempts at postmodern/subversive storytelling I get more and more at peace with when a story is "predictable". It's a shame because I know that ideally "the writer has followed the bare minimum requirements of storytelling" should be a given.

Films I really need to rewatch after many years: The Long Good Friday Alphaville Streets of Fire The Elephant Man Rear Window La Dolce Vita Hellboy Golden Voyage of Sinbad Blade Runner Magical Mystery Tour Labyrinth Super Mario Bros.

Rewatched the first Tomb Raider film with some friends for the 25th anniversary. Gets messy in the third act and is ground zero for all the family issues guff that plagues future games but on the whole is a glorious romp. Jolie is having a blast and her joy at playing Lara is infectious. Good fun!

Rewatched The Matrix with some friends last month and it clicked with me how much it feels like the culmination of the last fifteen years of sci-fi and action movies. There's the obvious John Woo/Hong Kong aspect and the red pill from Total Recall but I noticed some other things too. 1/5

I've always considered the 1995 Mortal Kombat film to be one of the best videogame films, mainly because it captures the tone and feel of where the games were at during that period. The combination of 90s dark fantasy, eastern aesthetics, broad comedy and dodgy digital effects is pure early era MK.

The way Snarks are used in HL1 vs the friendly Antlions in HL2 is a good way to see how Valve's design philosophy changed. The former having no tutorial and existing mainly for expanding Xen's ecosystem and trolling, whilst the latter are tiresomely tutorialised and then dropped after a chapter.
